Sundarbot

This bot just deleted an edit made shortly before it saved the page: presumably it caches the page for several minutes and didn't notice the edit conflict. Diff: [1].

Assessment

Sundar, I noticed that you've assessed the Sources of ancient Tamil history article as a GA. But, I thought GA or FA status was only given through a nomination and review process. Urgent:India page

Hi, In February 2007, we had an RfC on the Talk:India page (see here), and it was felt by a majority of the people commenting that stability of the article is important. Yesterday, out of the blue, Blnguyen, who has no history of editing on the India page, made a post on the page, that set all this off. Could you take a look at this section of the Talk:India page? In particular, User:Sarvagnya, for example, has returned to his scheme for de-constructing the India page. (By way of background: Nichalp, who usually watched over the article is busy this summer; Ragib, who was subbing for Nichalp is busy too. Blnguyen seems to think that the page is in bad shape and is about to be de-FA'd. He feels that it needs many more citations (and their lack) is reason enough for it to fail an FAR. Nichalp, when he was active, discouraged over-crowding the text with too many citations (especially when the text was composed in the summary-style, as India is). I think Blnguyen has some valid points: the page needs more (and certainly better) citations and the prose (especially of some new sections that were created by other people) needs revamping, but I think you might be in a good position to assess Blnguyen's idea of expanding the article to twice its size.) Etymology of Gaudā / Gowdā

Searching all words with "gu-, ku-, go-, ko-" among the same set you indicated, I found some interesting results :

Proto-Dravidian : *guḍ- , kur_- (*kuḍ-)

Meaning : small

cf. Hindi &c : Guḍia/Guḍḍa/Guḍḍi, etc .

(meaning=doll); these Dravida roots are not related to Gauḍā / Gowḍā ], but perhaps to modern Hindi forms which may be of Dravidian origin.

All following Dravidian and Sanskrita words may be related :

Proto-Dravidian : *konḍ_-

Meaning : hill (raised, uplifted ?)

Proto-Dravidian : *gōḍ-

Meaning : wall

These forms *konḍ_- and *gōḍ- are in conformity with the Gangai+IAST|kōnḍā}} title assumed by Rājendra Chola ("conqueror of Ganges").

Sanskrit: guḍ- "to guard, preserve" (Monier-Williams)

Gauḍa / Gowḍa seems to be related to the Sanskrit root gur ("to raise, uplift ...",cf. MW), from which words like Gaurava, Guru,etc were formed. Gauḍa brahmins are formed in almost all parts of the country and ancients texts report that Panch-Dravida brahmins had originally migrated from the north. I am presently wikifying / creating articles on individyual branches of brahmins, and I am searching for reliable sources of information on Dravida brahmins. wrt sikh/tamil ethnic relation; i was specifically referring the legislative grouping of sikhs as racial group and the infomation conveyed by the BBC programme 'The story of India'; in which the DNA evidence suggests close ethnic relationship with Dravidians and North Indian Jats. "Multi ethnic"

I'd noticed the change when it was made. It reflects one (rather recent) POV, but I didn't have the energy to get drawn into a debate and I was hoping someone else would deal with it. Tamils aren't "multi ethnic" in the sense one usually uses the term. However, talking about "ethnicity" in the context of India is problematic, because of the various meanings the group can have. Are the descendents of Telugu or Sinhala or Arab migrants who adopted the Tamil language and ways "ethnically" Tamil? It depends on the definition of "ethnicity" one chooses to adopt. The secondary literature usually refers to Tamils as an "ethnic group" on the basis of common cultural and linguistic traits and the assertion of a Tamil identity, but if you adopt ancestry or origin as your basis you'll get to a different conclusion. My inclination is to simply change it to "people", which is the wording the Britannica uses. What do you think? -- Arvind 10:26, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

Tamil Nadu Major Cities

• Maybe best way to go with this is to make list/table from Table - 5: Population - Class Categories (Census 2001 Provisional) of all Tamil Nadu towns and cities (See their Note: For further computation please save the page(s) in the hard-disk of your computer and open the same in Star Office or Open Office or MS Excel.) in the format of {|class="sortable wikitable" and put that in main article Tamil_Nadu#Demographics. Then arbitrarily select those above, say 500,000, as major cities and use GOI criteria: Class I: 1,00,000 & above persons as other cities and Class II: 50,000 to 99,999 persons as major towns, for inclusion on Template:Tamil Nadu. Class III : 20,000 to 49,999 persons other towns would take too much space there.

What do their urban status terms C.T., T.P., MC1, N.A.C., M.B., etc. mean?

Sangattamil

Hi Sundar. Over the next couple of weeks, I plan to start putting together a brief article about Sangattamizh, giving an overview of the language (grammar, morphology, etc.). Do you have any views on what we should call it in the article (in the title as well as in the body)? Possibilities include Sangattamil (or some variant thereof), Classical Tamil, and Old Tamil. The latter two are used more or less equally in the academic literature, while the former is the traditional Tamil name.
