Whitman is an unincorporated community in Washington County, Texas, United States.[1] According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 25 in 2000. It is located within the Greater Houston metropolitan area.

History

When the settlement opened its post office in 1876, it was given the name Whitman for Walter G. Whitman, its first postmaster. From 1885 until the post office's closure in 1907, Mrs. Kate Ewing served as postmistress. Whitman had a thriving business sector and processing industries by 1883, which were based on the local cotton output. Three churches served the community, and two of them were attended by black people. Whitman had 75 inhabitants by 1884. Whitman was nearly entirely dependent on agriculture by 1945. It only had one company. The population was 25 from 1945 to 2000, a year with no known companies.[2]

Whitman is located on Farm to Market Road 1155 near Jackson Creek and Farm to Market Road 2193, 14 mi (23 km) northeast of Brenham in eastern Washington County.[2]

Education

Today, the community is served by the Brenham Independent School District.
