Paleontological documents
[edit]Hi, I'm working on eurypterids and I plan to work with the chasmataspidids as well, so I would need some documents:
Chernyshev, B. I. (1948). New representative of Merostomata from the Lower Carboniferous. Vol. 2. pp. 119–130.{{cite book}}
:|journal=
ignored (help)Caster, Kenneth E.; Kjellesvig-Waering, Erik N. (1964). Upper Ordovician eurypterids of Ohio. ASIN B0007DOLSM.{{cite book}}
:|journal=
ignored (help)Caster, Kenneth E.; Brooks, H. K. (1956). "New fossils from the Canadian–Chazan (Ordovician) hiatus in Tennessee". Bulletins of American Paleontology. 36: 157–199.
For Unionopterus, Eocarcinosoma and Chasmataspis (at the moment without article), respectively. It is important that they contain images, especially the first, I say this because in my first request, the document had no images (I do not know if it was like that or they were missing).
Thanks in advance. Super Ψ Dro 20:58, 20 July 2018 (UTC)
- @Super Dromaeosaurus: #3 (Bulletins of American Paleontology) is available here. -Gazal world (talk) 22:09, 20 July 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you! It seems that the second one is also there. That only leaves the first one. Does anyone have it? Super Ψ Dro 08:50, 21 July 2018 (UTC)
- Nobody has access to the book? Super Ψ Dro 08:15, 30 July 2018 (UTC)
- Super Dromaeosaurus, not sure what the point of these repeated questions is, but you could certainly help the process by providing more information on what you're looking for. For instance, you're talking about a volume 2 but the Google page says volume 7. Also, you're now talking about a book but above you indicated that it is an article in a journal. Also, if it is indeed from a journal, you could try to find the ISSN (because for Ukrainian titles there are often vast amounts of different transcriptions, making it very hard for others to check their local library catalogues for it.) — Pajz (talk) 19:06, 30 July 2018 (UTC)
- I regret these inconveniences, in the papers that I have read they cited the document with the second volume. I think the OCLC is: 11636720. I can not find anything else. Super Ψ Dro 21:38, 30 July 2018 (UTC)

- @Winged Blades of Godric: Only six WorldCat libraries have the 2011 2nd edition OCLC 774901805 (I assume your 2004 is a typo, the only other edition was the 1997 1st edition). Bellezzasolo says they have access to the Bodliean Library, so you might try them, but scanning 167 pages is a big ask. If you're going to use that much of the work, this might be a case where it makes sense to scrape together the $20-$28 to buy the copy on AbeBooks.
- If you can't get any of the source any other way, I have the first edition, which seems to be the same as the 2nd except lacking the postscript. My personal scanning limit for this work would be one chapter, plus end notes, bibliography, and if necessary, index. If that would help you at all, let me know. --Worldbruce (talk) 02:19, 23 September 2018 (UTC)

1990 Sports Illustrated page number
[edit]{{resolved}}
- Stathoplos, Demmie (16 April 1990). "Lori Norwood, Penthathlete and Renaissance Woman". Sports Illustrated.
Hi. I'm looking for the page numbers for this 1990 Sports Illustrated article for Lori Norwood. The problem is the scanned copy on SI does not have any page numbers. EBSCO says the article starts on page 9 while Gale says it starts on 6A. If there are no page numbers in a hardcopy version, that's okay. Thanks, MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 21:58, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
- @MrLinkinPark333: I think it's on pages 19 to 23. Click on "Original Layout" on the right hand side of the article you linked and look at the page numbers at the top left. You can browse through the entire issue by clicking the left and right arrows. —Bruce1eetalk 22:32, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Bruce1ee: I have already before but that's where I find the problem. If you look at later articles after Norwood's profile, the page number doesn't work. For instance page 39 is numbered page 14 (which im assuming is counting all of the ads). --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 22:53, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
- @MrLinkinPark333: You're right, that is weird. I can't see how that page can be 14 if you look at the page thumbnail view. —Bruce1eetalk 23:35, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
- @MrLinkinPark333: I checked a printed copy, and found the page numbering to be the same as the scanned copy: pages 4 and 14 are numbered, the ones in-between aren't. I don't think you're going to get a more satisfactory answer. EBSCO and Gale no doubt have rules for creating numbers for unnumbered pages. It's also possible that SI printed different regional versions of the magazine. I'd link to SI's vault and call the page unnumbered. --Worldbruce (talk) 19:42, 3 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Worldbruce: Okay. It is an oddity but not a huge problem. Thank you! --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 19:44, 3 October 2018 (UTC)

Looking for book review of Sexual Preference
[edit]Hello, I am looking for Doug Futuym and Richard Wagner's review of Sexual Preference; it appeared in The Advocate issue 335 on January 21, 1982. [edit]{{resolved}} Quick question: could someone with HathiTrust access kindly take a quick look at page 82 of Reports of the President and of the Treasurer - John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation OCLC 1715876 for 1992. All I need to know is what it says about Nina Menkes, specifically a masters degree from UCLA in 1987 (someone keeps removing this from the article, I want to be sure that the source confirms it). Thanks, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 11:17, 14 September 2018 (UTC)
- You want to determine whether Nina Merkes has a master's degree by what Hathi Trust says about her? That is likely based on she has told them. Wouldn't it be better to see if UCLA has any information on that? ♦ J. Johnson (JJ) (talk) 21:19, 15 September 2018 (UTC)
- No, J. Johnson, I want to know what the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation said about her when it awarded her a fellowship. I rather doubt that they took her word alone for the nature and extent of her previous studies, but that's not the point; if the source confirms it there's no reason for the IP to be allowed to remove it. Page numbers for books by Theodor Adorno
[edit]I would like to have more biblio information about a book vaguely referred to as being published in 1997 titled Aesthetic Theory (English version). On p. 99, near the end of the section titled "Art Beauty", he makes an argument for improvisation. On p. 116 he says jazz is antithetical to Beethoven. I would also like to find page numbers (and other bibio info) for books by Adorno referred to even more vaguely as containing sections about jazz. These are The Jargon of Authenticity (1973) and Prisms (1981). That is what a Wikipedia contributor has so generously provided as cited sources.

Access to en.cnki.com.cn?
[edit]{{resolved}}
Does anyone know how to download articles from the big Chinese archive at http://en.cnki.com.cn/? It has abstracts in English of what would be very interesting journal articles, but when I try to download a pdf I end up at what appears to be a login screen – in Chinese. I don't know if it's asking for a password, my proletarian credentials, or whether I would take a short survey. ♦ J. Johnson (JJ) (talk) 23:38, 4 October 2018 (UTC)
- I hope someone who actually reads Chinese drops by, but here's what I could decipher from kanji that have the same meaning in Japanese. Long story short, you'll need to pay in order to have access to the articles on this site.
- If you decide to move forward, here's what you need to do. First, you need to make an account; it only requires a username, password, e-mail address, and authentication (it's like a captcha? but I'm not sure what it's called in this case). After you make the account and login, it asks you if you're in China or not. I was able to proceed by hitting the top right button. The bottom button is for those overseas, and it directs you to a website in English, but I ended up getting directed back to the Chinese website later. Once you get through that you'll get to the site where you can download the pdf. Push the red button on the right that says "立即充值". From there it'll take you to a site where you can add money to your account to buy the article. I'm afraid past that point I can't help--I didn't try adding any money.
- I hope that helps you get a better idea of how you want to proceed.Mcampany (talk) 02:40, 5 October 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, that's a great reconnaissance, thanks very much. It definitely settles that I won't be going any further. I was wondering if I might enlist the aid of a Chinese-speaking editor, but the per-article fee pretty much squelches that. I wonder if we should have a tag for something like "Additional content not available because sources are sequestrated behind a paywall". ♦ J. Johnson (JJ) (talk) 21:27, 5 October 2018 (UTC)
Literature about Leucospermum winteri
[edit]{{resolved}} Can anyone help me to get available:

I will use it to create an new article on Leucospermum winteri, the only one of 48 species of Leucospermum for which a scientific description is not online available.
Thanks in advance, kind regards, Dwergenpaartje (talk) 08:35, 18 July 2018 (UTC)

- @Dwergenpaartje: On the left of the page there's a PDF button, which I think is the full text of the source. —Bruce1eetalk 05:48, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
- @Dwergenpaartje: I have JSTOR Plants access, and can confirm that Bruce1ee's link ultimately leads only to the full sized illustration (of what is pictured in thumbnail), not to any text. JSTOR archived a collection of the original artwork rather than the journal in which it was reproduced. The meta data describes the image as:
- Relation: Flowering Plants of Africa, vol. 45, plate no. 1781
- Description: Published in 1978. Flowering branch and flower dissection in colour, flower cross-section in pencil.
- The journal probably hasn't been digitized, so you'll need a library with a physical copy of the relevant issue. I think you're looking for the article in volume 45 (1978–1979) of which plate 1781 is a part.
- I did see that page, but I do not think there is a description hiding. Dwergenpaartje (talk) 22:54, 18 July 2018 (UTC)
- If no one here can get you a free copy, email me for a link to a library's special collections department that will copy it and email it to you for a modest fee (US$5-$10). --Worldbruce (talk) 19:04, 22 July 2018 (UTC)

DownBeat review ca. 1971-72
[edit]I am looking for a review (if it exists) of Mal Waldron's 1971 album The Call to improve said article. I cannot find any exact release date of the recording and I am not even sure if they even reviewed the album. RoseCherry64 (talk) 19:06, 27 September 2018 (UTC)
- @RoseCherry64: FYI, I searched between 4 March 1971 and 22 June 1972, with the exception of four missing issues: 8 July, 5 August, and 2 September, all 1971, and 6 January 1972. I found no review. Other searchers may wish to concentrate on the issues I didn't have access to. --Worldbruce (talk) 01:41, 2 October 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for checking. RoseCherry64 (talk) 16:51, 2 October 2018 (UTC)
- @RoseCherry64: I checked Downbeat on microfilm at a second library, and the same four dates were absent, so there probably were no such issues. My assumption that it was bi-weekly is likely wrong. It may have been bi-weekly much of the year, but monthly during the winter and summer holidays. I also searched "Readers' Guide Retrospective: 1890-1982 (H.W. Wilson)" through EBSCO. The only articles it shows in Downbeat about Mal Waldron are in December 1980 and April 1981, so I think no review from 1971-72 exists. If you concur, this request should be marked {{done}}. --Worldbruce (talk) 15:22, 14 October 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for checking again. Marking as resolved as it seems like they did not review this album. Although, I do suspect that the "Reader's Guide Retrospective" doesn't cover album reviews? RoseCherry64 (talk) 15:40, 14 October 2018 (UTC)

For Space Launcher System. Can someone please confirm that this book discusses the USAF Space Launcher System program of the 1960s, and if not too lengthy, provide a copy of the passage? Please note that this program is different from the current NASA Space Launch System.

- @Spinningspark: The 1999 edition of this book is available online here. I don't know if you must have the 2013 edition. —Bruce1eetalk 13:31, 4 October 2018 (UTC)
- "Reprinted" generally means that there haven't been any changes (just begs the question "compared to what?"). Not sure why you are specifically requesting a rather obscure reprint (the ISBN has no Worldcat hit whatsoever). It appears that the original 1999 edition (which does not seem to have an ISBN) was, in some shape or form, turned into volume 1 ("The Space Shuttle decision, 1965 - 1972") of the series "History of the space shuttle", edited also by Mr. Heppenheimer. The ISBN of that volume is ISBN 1-588-34014-7 (table of contents). There could be changes between these two editions, but I doubt it. If you compare the table of contents of the 2002 edition with the one from the 1999 one that Bruce linked to, they seem to match perfectly. Since the Library of Congress does not seem to have any other edition in their catalogue, it hence appears likely to me that archive.org has what you are looking for. — Pajz (talk) 13:48, 4 October 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks. I have no reason to think the 2013 reprint is any different, I only mentioned it because I thought it would be easier to find in libraries. I'm not seeing "Space Launcher System" in the archive link provided, at least, not by that name. I suspect I have been pointed to the wrong book. If anyone can find a Heppenheimer book discussing SLS I would be interested. Otherwise, please close this thread. SpinningSpark 15:08, 4 October 2018 (UTC)
