[edit]Analyzable as Proto-Indo-European *bel- (“strong”) (perhaps via an unattested *βελτός (*beltós, “desired”), per Seiler) + -ίων (-íōn). Cognates include Sanskrit बल (bala), Latin dēbilis, and Old Church Slavonic бол҄ии (bolʹii).[1]
