Inherited from Old East Slavic боꙗринъ (bojarinŭ), from Old Church Slavonic болꙗринъ (boljarinŭ), from Bulgar, attested in Greek variously as βωυλε, βοιλας, βοηλας, βουληα, βοιλᾶς, βολιᾶς. The form with -j- might have come from contamination with Old East Slavic бои (boi).
