Etymology

First attested in the mid-1500s. Borrowed from Turkic language, ultimately from Proto-Turkic *yüŕüm (grape). Cognate with Ottoman Turkish اوزوم (üzüm, grape), Uyghur ئۈزۈم (üzüm), Turkish üzüm, Azerbaijani үзүм (üzüm), Chuvash иҫӗм (iś̬ĕm), Kazakh жүзім (jüzım), Tatar йөзем (yözem), Uzbek uzum.

Cognate with Russian изю́м (izjúm, raisin), which is from Middle Russian изюмъ (izjum), attested since 1618-1919, 1623.
