From Proto-Permic *mɔrt, from Proto-Uralic *mertä, ultimately from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mr̥tás. Cognates include Erzya мирде (miŕďe, husband).

Permic cognates include Komi-Zyrian морт (mort) and Komi-Permyak морт (mort).
