From Proto-Selkup *pitə, from Proto-Samoyedic *pitä, Proto-Uralic *pesä.

Related to Hungarian fészek and Finnish pesä. Cognates include Northern Selkup питы (pity) and Tundra Nenets пидя (pyidya).
