From Proto-Indo-European *bʰor- (to hum, buzz) and cognate with Ancient Greek πεμ-φρη-δών (pem-phrē-dṓn, kind of wasp, tree wasp), Sanskrit बम्भर (bambhara, bee), भम्भराली (bhambharālī, fly), Lithuanian bim̃balas, Lithuanian bim̃bilas (hornet), Latvian bimbals (horsefly), bambals (beetle).[1][2][3]
