[edit]Inherited from Middle Persian ʾylmʾn' (ērmān), derived from Avestan 𐬀𐬌𐬭𐬌𐬌𐬇𐬨𐬁 (airiiə̄mā, “fellow tribesman; name of a divinity”), from Proto-Iranian *aryamā́, ultimately from Proto-Indo-Iranian *aryamā́ (“fellow, companion; member of one's own tribe/clan; name of a deity”).
