From Proto-Iranian *mácyah, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mátsyas. Compare Persian ماهی (mâhi), Baluchi ماہیگ (máhíg) and Younger Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬯𐬌𐬌𐬀 (masiia).
