Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Iranian *mayš- (“to blink, wink”), from Proto-Indo-European *meyg⁽ʷ⁾ʰ- (“to blink, cover (the eyes)”). Cognate with Persian مژه (može, “eyelash”), Lithuanian miẽgas (“sleep”), Proto-Slavic *měžiti (“to close one's eyes”).
