Etymology
[edit]Of uncertain origin.
Traditionally derived from Proto-Indo-European *welH- (“to turn, wind, roll”), per Pokorny.[1] However, later linguists such as Mayrhofer and Persson reject this etymology, preferring to link the word with either वल् (val, “to turn round”) or to Dravidian; compare Tamil வளை (vaḷai, “to bend”).
