Inherited from Prakrit 𑀲𑀼𑀡𑀇 (suṇaï), from Sanskrit शृणोति (śṛṇoti), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćr̥náwti, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱl̥néwti. Cognate with Nepali सुन्नु (sunnu) and Assamese শুনা (xuna), and distantly with Irish cluin (to hear).
