Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Iranian *(p)stánas, from Proto-Indo-European *pstón-o-s (“breast”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬟𐬱𐬙𐬁𐬥𐬀 (fštāna, “breast of a woman”) and Persian پستان (pestân, “breast”), Proto-Germanic *spenô (“nipple”), Ancient Greek στήνιον (stḗnion, “breast, chest”), Irish sine (“nipple”), Lithuanian spenys (“(animal) teats”) and Tocharian B päścane (“pair of breasts”).
