Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /jàʊɴ/
  • Romanization: MLCTS: raung • ALA-LC: roṅʻ • BGN/PCGN: yaung • Okell: yauñ

Etymology 1

[edit]

Probably from a Proto-Sino-Tibetan *rwa(m/ŋ) (to swell; swollen, fat) (STEDT root #5951; lexical entries like "jɑ̃u²² 'swell (of tissue)'" aren't linked to the root page), with cognates in Qiangic/rGyalrongic, Kuki-Chin, Tangkhuli, Tamangic, and Kiranti. Whether the root is allofamically related to *s-bʷa(m/p) (swell, fat, rounded part, mountain) (whence Old Chinese (OC *pʰaːns, “fat, plump”)) or *ʔ-b(r)um (fruit; smallpox) (whence perhaps Proto-Tani *bum (smallpox)) is uncertain.

Etymology 2

[edit]
This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (ɑ⁵³ jɑ̃u²² "color"), and doesn't seem to be mentioned by Luce 1981. Any relation to Proto-Kuki-Chin *waaŋ-I, waan-II ~ waak (light, shine) or *klaaŋ-I, klaan-II (to shine; light, bright), the latter which apparently has Lolo-Burmese reflexes and may be related to a Chinese word family including (OC *laŋ, “sunshine”)? (*kl- > r- would have to be explained)”

Noun

ရောင် (raung)

  1. (in compounds) radiance, glow, color
