  1. One of two major dialect groups of the High German language which is spoken primarily in central Germany, Luxembourg, easternmost Belgium, and southeastern Limburg (in the Netherlands); distinguished from Upper German by the preservation of Proto-Germanic *-pp- and *-mp-.
