[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *ei, an early locative singular determiner, formed from the root *h₁é-, *h₁o-. Compare Ancient Greek εἰ (ei, “if”), Gothic 𐌴𐌹 (ei, “and, so that, be it”). Follows from ablative Proto-Indo-European *ed.
