Etymology

From Indonesian Sumatera, from Sanskrit समुद्र (samudra, sea). Mentioned in the 11th century in Sanskrit as समुद्रभूमि (samudrabhūmi, land of Sumatra), gradually replacing the earlier सुवर्णद्वीप (suvarṇadvīpa).
