Me and a friend have been arguing bc I say sherbet and he says Sherbert. Which one is the American way to say it? My family says sherbet just like me, but his family says Sherbert. How do we know which one it really is? — This comment was unsigned.

Different authorities prescribe different pronunciations. I say "sherbert" ("sure Burt") but I sometimes hear people say it as "sore-bay." Either pronunciation will convey the meaning, most of the time. --Connel MacKenzie 00:25, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

Actually the confirmed correct way to say sherbet is sherbet. If you look in any dictionary you will see that it is spelled and pronounced 'sherbet'. The American way to say it, or the "right" American way to say it, is sherbet but a lot of Americans mispronouce it. In all the dictionaries I own the correct way to say and spell it is sherbet.

Despite the fact that you are talking about prescribing pronunciations which is not the goal of this dictionary, you failed to convey how you think it should be pronounced.
