This template generates the ===Pronunciation=== section of a Galician term, including the phonemic pronunciation and rhymes, as well as (if manually specified) audio files and homophones.
Usage
Quick reference
Page | Example | Comment | ||
---|---|---|---|---|
achaiar | {{gl-pr}} |
In some cases, no parameters are needed. | ||
gabanza | {{gl-pr}} |
If the standard pronunciation includes /θ/ or /ɡ/, variant pronunciations with seseo and/or gheada will be generated as well. | ||
| ||||
afixación | {{gl-pr|afiksaciôn}} |
If the automatically generated pronunciation is incorrect, use a respelling to indicate the correct pronunciation (see below) | ||
| ||||
melada | {{gl-pr|mẹlada,mėlada}} |
Multiple comma-separated respellings can be given. | ||
con | {{gl-pr|con<q:preposition>|còn<q:noun>}} |
Multiple respellings can also be given as separate parameters, or comma-separated and separate-parameter respellings can be combined. Comma-separated respellings are displayed comma-separated on the same line, while separate-parameter respellings are displayed on separate lines. Use the inline modifier syntax to add properties of specific respellings. | ||
almuíña | {{gl-pr|almu.íña}} |
Explicit syllable dividers can be given to force a syllable division where it would not normally occur, or to specify a different division than the default (see below). | ||
alvariza | {{gl-pr|+<audio:LL-Q9307 (glg)-Estevoaei-alvariza.wav>}} |
Here we give an audio pronunciation. No special respelling is needed so we use + .
| ||
| ||||
efe | {{gl-pr|raw:/f/<q:phoneme>|èfe<q:letter name>}} |
A respelling preceded by raw: is a "raw" pronunciation, and should be followed by /.../ to specify the phonemic pronunciation, [...] to specify the phonetic pronunciation, or /.../ [...] to specify both. Here we give a phonemic pronunciation of the letter on one line along with a qualifier (which is displayed before the pronunciation, hence we attach it to the first respelling), and the respelling of the letter name on a separate line.

Respellings
Vowel quality
The acute accent á í ú
used in the standard orthography of Galician indicates stress in the vowels /a i u/. Note that using é ó
to indicate a stressed mid vowel will return an error, use the following respellings instead:
- Circumflex accent
ê ô
indicates stressed mid-close vowels /e o/. - Grave accent
è ò
indicates stressed mid-open vowels /ɛ ɔ/.
In pre-tonic syllables, the quality of <e o>
must be given manually, otherwise the template will return an error.
- Dot above
ė ȯ
indicates unstressed mid-close vowels /e o/. - Dot below
ẹ ọ
indicates unstressed mid-open vowels /ɛ ɔ/.
Word-final vowel reduction to [ɐ ɪ ʊ] is handled automatically. These vowels can also be forced with a breve ă ĕ ŏ
. For example, for the word termonuclear we use the respelling tèrmŏnuclẹár
which yields /ˌtɛɾmonuklɛˈaɾ/ [ˌt̪ɛɾ.mʊ̃.nu.klɛˈaɾ]. Note that all stress marks in the respelling will be converted to secondary stress in the IPA transcription, except for the last one.
In some limited cases, the template is able to deduce the correct pronunciation of <e o>
without the need for manual input.
- Words ending in
-el(s) -ol(s)
are assumed to have mid-open vowels /ɛ ɔ/. - The sequence
ou
is assumed to represent the diphthong /ow/. - Words ending in
-ello(s) -edo(s) -eza(s) -ón(s)
are assumed to have mid-closed vowels /e o/. - Words ending in
-mente
are assumed to be adverbs. The ending is automatically given as /ˈmente/, and secondary stress is added to the first part of the adverb.
In a few cases, these rules will return erroneous outputs, so a manual respelling will be required. For example, aquel and dirimente require the respellings aquêl
and dirimènte
, respectively.
Diphthongs/hiatuses
The sequences au eu ou ai ei oi
and ua ue uo ia ie io
will be treated as falling/rising diphthongs by default. To force a hiatus, add a dot between the vowels.
The sequences iu
and ui
are handled in a particular way. The sequence iú
will be treated as a hiatus by default. In order to force a hiatus in uí
, a dot must be added u.í
. When the sequence ui
forms a diphthong, the output will be /wi/ after a velar consonant and /uj/ otherwise. The diphthong iu
will be considered falling /iw/.
Parameters
The allowed parameters are as follows:
|1=
,|2=
, ...- Specify a line of pronunciation; see above.
|rhyme=
- Specify one or more comma-separated rhymes that apply to all pronunciations and are displayed below all of them, without additional indentation. Inline modifiers can be specified, as for
<rhyme:...>
. Use this when there are multiple lines of pronunciations, to avoid additional indentation. If needed, use|rhyme=-
to hide the rhymes section. |hmp=
- Specify one or more comma-separated homophones that apply to all pronunciations and are displayed below all of them, without additional indentation. Inline modifiers can be specified, as for
<hmp:...>
. Use this when there are multiple lines of pronunciations, to avoid additional indentation. |audio=
,|audio2=
, ...- Specify one or more audio files that apply to all pronunciations and are displayed below all of them, without additional indentation. Inline modifiers can be specified, as for
<audio:...>
. (You cannot specify multiple comma-separated audio files in a single parameter, as audio filenames sometimes have embedded commas in them not followed by a space.) Use this when there are multiple lines of pronunciations, to avoid additional indentation. |pagename=
- Explicitly specify the pagename, for testing purposes and for use on documentation pages.
