Welcome!
[edit]Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.
If you are unfamiliar with wiki editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.
These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:
- Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy documenting how Wiktionary pages should be formatted. All entries should conform to this standard. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing page for a similar word, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
- Our Criteria for inclusion (CFI) define exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary, though it may be a bit technical and longwinded. The most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
- If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
- The FAQ aims to answer most of your remaining questions, and there are several help pages that you can browse for more information.
- A glossary of our technical jargon, and some hints for dealing with the more common communication issues.
- If you have anything to ask about or suggest, we have several discussion rooms such as the Tea room, Beer parlour and Grease pit.
I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian. If you have any questions, bring them to the Wiktionary:Information desk. If you do so, please sign your posts with four tildes: ~~~~ which automatically produces your username and the current date and time. KevinUp (talk) 13:06, 12 December 2018 (UTC)
Alternative forms for Old French and Old English
[edit]Hi. When creating new entries for Old French and Old English that are alternative forms of another lemma, would you mind adding quotations for such entries? If quotations for the alternative form cannot be found, it might not be a good idea to create such entries because the red link listed in the main lemma may be incorrect. Translations Check
[edit]Hi, I am new to wikitionary. I saw a list where-in it had the list of words which needs to be checked for translation. I visited the page and under the {checktrans-top} tag, I saw an entry with t-check for a particular language. I am a native speaker of the language and confirm it is correct. Now should i just remove an entry from this tag or do I need to do anything else as well? --Cyarenkatnikh (talk) 14:18, 25 December 2018 (UTC)
- M8 your most likely better posting questions about these things in the Information desk than asking someone who joined ten months later than you. W/ reguards to your quęstion, you should probably see WT:TRANS for coherently crafted instructions. Basically, you just move the verified translation to the main translation table with the {t} template insted of the {t-check} template. Nought else required (I think). Regarding Quotations
[edit]Quotations serve two purposes: (1) They provide evidence that a word or sense exists (2) They provide examples of how it is used. Some of the quotations you have added shows that the term exists, but not how it is used. Also, ideally, quotations are to be sourced from different time ranges and a variety of sources, e.g. printed publications such as books and newspapers that can be accessed online, various sites that index periodicals, public domain works which have been digitalized and posted online by Google Books, or text from Wikisource. Citations that are clustered around the same time period, or do not demonstrate how the term is used, are best added to the Citations: page. Also, be sure to arrange the order of quotations according to date (from earliest to latest). KevinUp (talk) 18:05, 3 January 2019 (UTC)
Suffix, prefix or affix templates in etymology section
[edit]When something like {{prefix|la|ad|laudo}}
(ad- + laudo) is added to aloer#Old French, it categorizes the Old French lemma into
Category:Latin words prefixed with ad- and Category:Latin words suffixed with -o (denominative), which is incorrect. In future, please use {{m|la|ad-}}
+ {{m|la|laudo}}
or {{prefix|la|ad|laudo|nocat=1}}
(less recommended). Also, would you mind correcting etymology 1 of aloer#Old French? (just to be sure that you have read and understood this message). KevinUp (talk) 13:31, 19 January 2019 (UTC)
Desaccointier, though I appreciated your converting {{etyl}}
to {{inh}}
, please only use {{inh}}
when the word is derived wholly from the previous form. I cases like root derivatives, you need to use {{der}}
there. You can read more about that on the {{inh}}
template page. Can you please go back and fix the changes you made? Thanks! --{{victar|talk}}

I can see you're also using {{bor}}
wrongly. It is only to be used in the first part of an etymology, otherwise you're sorting many entries into appropriate categories, so it's very paramount that you fix those. --{{victar|talk}}

- Hi. As mentioned before,
{{bor}}
should only be used in the first part of an etymology. In adil#Indonesian (incorrect edit), the second template after{{inh}}
should be{{der}}
not{{bor}}
. KevinUp (talk) 13:28, 6 February 2019 (UTC)
- Desaccointier, please reply, otherwise we'll have to count you as unresponsive. --
