[edit]From Proto-Central-Pacific *tovu, from Proto-Oceanic *topu (compare with Hawaiian kō and Tongan tō), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *təbuh (compare with Malay tebu), from Proto-Austronesian *təbuS.
