Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Turkic *köri-, *köŕ- (to see, look).[1] Azerbaijani göz (eye) is equally derived from the Proto-Turkic root *kör- (to see, look) according to the regular sound change of /ŕ/ to /z/ in Common Turkic, whereas this shift did not occur in Azerbaijani görmək and its cognate verbs in other Turkic languages, such as Old Turkic 𐰚𐰇𐰼 (kör-, to see), Turkish görmek (to see), Kazakh көру (köru, to see), Uzbek koʻrmoq (to see), etc.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): [ɟœrˈmæc], [-mæj]
  • (Tabriz) IPA(key): [d͡ʒœrˈmɑχ]
  • Hyphenation: gör‧mək
  • Audio (Baku):(file)
