[edit]From Old Swedish kompan, kumpan, kompon, from Middle Low German kumpān, from Old French compain, compaing, from Late Latin compāniō (literally “he with whom one shares one's bread”), from com- + pānis (with + bread). Cognate of German Kumpan, Kumpel, Icelandic kumpánn, kompánn, Polish kompan. Doublet of kompani and kompanjon.
