[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]Variant of lansi (“low-lying land”), possibly by backformation from dialectal lantea (“fertile, of land”). Semantic development has probably been through "fertile soil, material used as fertilizer". Attested since the early 18th century.
A connection has also been purported to Proto-Germanic *hlandą (“urine”).
