[edit]Borrowed from New Latin potassium, from English potassium, coined in 1807 by Humphrey Davy, from English potash, from Dutch potasch, from Middle Dutch pottaschen (literally “pot ashes”), ultimately derived from Proto-Germanic *puttaz (“pot”) and *askǭ (“ash”).
