Balaenoptera musculus est mammale marinum parvordinis Mysticetorum.[5] Quod mammale, 29.9 metra[6] longum et 173 tonnae pondere,[6] est maximum animal notum quod umquam exsistit.[7][8]

Distributio (partes caeruleae)
Corpus est longum et tenue, cutis cinerascens et caerulea in parte dorsali et aliquantulum clarior in parte ventrali.[9] Sunt tres saltem subspecies distinctae: B. m. musculus in oceanis Atlantico et Pacifico septentrionalibus, B. m. intermedia in Oceano Australi, et B. m. brevicauda in oceanis Indico et Pacifico australi. Praeterea, Balaenoptera musculus indica, qui oceanum Indicum habitat, fortasse est alia subspecies. Aliis Mysticetis similis, minutis crustaceis euphausiaceis appellatis paene solum vescitur.[10]
