Alias
editI removed the English alias "location" from this property, because I am concerned that when people are looking for a "geographical location" property they will get this property as a result, and not look any closer. I've seen this happen with similar setups like "parent taxon" being used for "parent" (which we don't actually have). Espeso (talk) 20:04, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
First editions only?
editIs there a reason this needs to be restricted to first editions? Can qualifiers simply be used to indicate subsequent editions if it they are notably published in a different location? If not, then perhaps the label should be changed to 'place of first edition publication' to better identify this limitation. Joshbaumgartner (talk) 06:12, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
- My feeling is that this is going to be extended, as I just did, for publication in those instances. See Q3303832 for example. I think the limitation exists more for books than anything else. --Izno (talk) 16:52, 7 July 2013 (UTC)
- I am going to change this, there is no limitation for books as long as the "place of publication" is used in the right "edition item". See Wikidata:Books task force for more details.--Micru (talk) 18:04, 20 August 2013 (UTC)
Use as qualifier
editThis property is occasionally being used as a qualifier to publication date (P577). (For example, Q11168.) Is this correct? --Yair rand (talk) 12:54, 23 June 2015 (UTC)
- Probably more correct. Seems to me that a new edition of a text could be published elsewhere... but I guess that use case for us is covered since we create a new item. --Izno (talk) 13:54, 23 June 2015 (UTC)
- It's not used this way for books but in Super Mario Bros. (Q11168) it's ok. --Kolja21 (talk) 14:58, 24 June 2018 (UTC)
Change in the list of value types
editI removed film festivals from possible value type. There haven't really been statements where a film festival was given as a property for this qualifier, and for good reason: a) a film festival is not a geographical place, b) screening at a film festival does not constitute publication. – Máté (talk) 20:16, 8 January 2019 (UTC)
- A screening at a film festival is of course a publication and the festivals are located on geographical places e.g. Toronto International Film Festival (Q390018) is in Toronto (Q172). Fim festival is as good as television station or DVD region code. I reverted this. -- MovieFex (talk) 21:05, 8 January 2019 (UTC)
- DVD regions are greographical, TV stations are indeed problematic. But how is a festival appearance publication? – Máté (talk) 08:51, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
- @MovieFex: @Máté: Wouldn't P4647 "location of first performance" be more suited to indicate a film premiering at a festival? Moebeus (talk) 08:59, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
- A film festival takes place in a certain country/city (geographical) and the films are shown to public in cinemas (publication). May be location of first performance (P4647) could work too but nobody can say for sure that the dates in WD are correct or complete. -- MovieFex (talk) 09:14, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
- See also User_talk:MovieFex#Releases. -- MovieFex (talk) 09:23, 9 January 2019 (UTC)

- The current value type list was a mess, accepting nearly any value. I think geographic entity (Q27096213) and location in a fictional work (Q15796005) should cover all the classes that are meant for this property, so added only them. I also wrote a clarification to direct people to properties published in (P1433), original broadcaster (P449), broadcast by (P3301) and location of first performance (P4647). Usage for newspaper ....
editHi,
I wanted to collect some feedback about the exact meaning of this property for the case of newspapers .... is this property indicating:
- a) The place where a newspaper is available/sold/distributed
- b) The place from where it is published/written/edited, i.e. name of the city where the publisher is located
- c) or both
this is affecting also other classes ... could you share your understanding?
---
I am also interested in this. When looking at some examples, most of the time the place of publication is a nation-wide entity for bigger news outlets and just the city (as place of publication) for the local news outlets. When a local news outlet is available in a bigger region, this isn't covered by with multiple claims. Maybe as a proposal: If a region is used in this claim, its the availability of the work. If a city/place is used, its where the publisher is located ? But I see problems with the implicit knowledge of the meaning baked into the claim here. Printed in
editThe physical booklet described at https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q11239817 was "Printed in China", so should place of publication be China? Said user manual is for the HP Pavilion dv5-1235dx Entertainment Notebook PC and was seen by consumers in the United States market. --User123o987name (talk) 09:16, 15 July 2020 (UTC)
