Literary fiction and properties

edit

Please check belletristic literature (Q268416), fiction (Q8253972), and high literature (Q6647667). I reckon you are referring to one of them in your past edits, instead of the broader fiction (Q8253). Also, please use genre (P136) in such cases. Anatomical Cavity

edit

The term anatomical cavity (Q28654015) as Uberon defines it is the anatomical space that's surrounded by something else. The cavity of the mouth is for example the empty space that's surrounded by the mouth. The stomach on the other hand is an anatomical organ. ChristianKl (talk) 21:15, 5 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi @ChristianKl:! Thanks for pointing that out. I was simply dealing with the fact these were treated as a subclass of cavity -- which seems inapropriate, in the grand schemes especially when both body cavity (Q629138) and anatomical cavity (Q28654015) exist -- blanket "cavity (Q28367692)" seemed inappropriate, and they did not belong as a subclass of physical container (Q987767) which they were earlier. Your to do list - occupations and enslavement

edit

Hi Sadads, I'm fairly new to wikidata and was looking through your to do list queries. I'm assuming the African Americans who need Occupations are wikidata items that need occupations. But the Slavery is not a choice list (btw I just get a blank page with this link) - how do you suggest recording enslaved people on wikidata? Are there any guidelines? Thanks, Eartha78 (talk) 03:07, 22 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Eartha78:! For some reason that petscan link isn't working properly (I will rewrite the query later this week and ping you). I moved all of the uses of enslaved person (Q12773225) in occupation (P106) to social classification (P3716). Being a slave is a socially defined position within society that is separated from the actual work -- so when I found a few instances of that, I figured that it makes a lot more sense. I haven't talked with other folks about it, but there were only ~50 uses of slave in human items when I ran the query the other week -- so I am assuming I am the only person starting to build out this data deliberately.
As for the occupations! Yep that is correct: I have been hacking away at those, as we develop the appropriate ethnicity labels through the distributed game. During Black history month I got a couple requests for the correct occupations for folks (asking questions like "who are the U.S. black writers?"). Sadads (talk) 14:12, 22 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
thanks for the reply. They are plenty of other people described as slaves if you do a free text search for "american slave" or similar. Interesting noting who is described as an "enslaved x" (which is my preference). Are there any guidelines, or what do you suggest, about recording who their slaveholder was - for example in the case of Sally Hemmings (Q257464). Also are there guidelines about how to record when slave status ends, whether by their own actions or others - for example Frederick Douglass (Q215562).Thanks again, Eartha78 (talk) 15:28, 22 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hey @Eartha78:, so another editor, @GerardM: appears to concur with our tactic, and has started adding the application social classification for slave. Now we should be able to start adding other characteristics to make sure that we know the characteristics of other slaves (like start time (P580) and end time (P582), and we still need to figure out the owner/employer/etc, thing). I will start mapping some of these on the talk page for enslaved person (Q12773225), sometime later in the week (like each slave, should also have an occupation and nationality: see the query. But that means a fair mount of other work :) Sadads (talk) 13:50, 23 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
thanks for the reply, I'll keep an eye on the discussion page to see how things develop. Eartha78 (talk) 16:40, 23 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
I asked how to model slavery as being a slave is not an occupation. Carpenter is, blacksmith is etc. By stating slavery as something else, it becomes possible to model slavery and its follow up concepts as well. For instance, who was the owner, did he/she became freed and when.. Thanks, GerardM (talk) 06:21, 24 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Where was the conversation @GerardM:? We should write some guidance on the slave item based on concensus. Sadads (talk) 13:53, 24 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Hsarrazin: Oh good! Glad we caught that :P Interwiki links frequently get mismatched, if we aren't careful. I do matching alot from WDFIST too, so no worries: know how easy it is to make a mistake. Sadads (talk) 00:40, 28 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Dead Sea Scrolls

edit

You added a Library of Congress authority ID to the above Q (diff), but there was some glitch in what you pasted and that causes the error "The LCCN id Dead Sea scrolls. is not valid" seen in the authority control box at the bottom of the above enwiki article. Each alternative appears to be unsatisfactory:

Any idea what should be done? Perhaps just remove the LCCN property? By the way, we met in relation to some analysis of external links at enwiki. Johnuniq (talk) 04:43, 27 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Oh, huh, I thought I pasted: http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79071139.html . That must have been a copy error on my part. Sadads (talk) 18:26, 27 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
Damn, why I couldn't I find that!? Thanks. Johnuniq (talk) 23:03, 27 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
It took me going a couple pages into the results at id.loc.gov: http://id.loc.gov/search/?q=Dead%20Sea%20scrolls&start=21, Sadads (talk) 00:24, 28 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Wikidata:Property_proposal/broader_concept

edit

Pinging you (and others) since you've done a lot of MnM matching on the AAT thesaurus and others, as to whether or not you think it would be useful to be able to record the "broader" field in thesauruses like this, allowing one to reference the thesaurus structure in WDQS queries. @Multichill: Thanks! Done! Sadads (talk) 00:27, 1 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Multichill: I have a meeting with someone there working on diversity among the artists in their collection on Monday: if you get a chance to upload before then, it would be super awesome to be able to show a query that helps them with evaluating gender and ethnicity of creators among the artists! Sadads (talk) 00:46, 1 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Running the import now. More than half of the paintings are imported now. Could use a hand with creating the missing painters, see https://tools.wmflabs.org/multichill/painters/index.php?collection=Q913672
SELECT ?gender (COUNT(?gender) AS ?count) WHERE {
  SELECT DISTINCT ?creator ?gender WHERE {
    ?item wdt:P195 wd:Q913672 .
    ?item wdt:P31 wd:Q3305213 .
    ?item wdt:P170 ?creator .
    ?creator wdt:P21 ?gender
    }
  } GROUP BY ?gender
 LIMIT 4000
Try it!
Try it! Try it!
Should show the number of male and female painters in the collection I think. Multichill (talk) 16:44, 3 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Multichill: Thanks! I will do some work on it over the weekend :D Cheers, Sadads (talk) 23:39, 3 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Specifying values for "Commons category" property

edit

Hi, Sadads. You might not have looked at the description for Property:P373, "Commons category", but when you specify a value for this property you do not include the "Category:" prefix. You specified the prefix on some items, including Q52447753, and that is causing problems on Wikimedia Commons. I have fixed one or two of them: if you could check others that you changed, that would be great. Please be sure to give just the category name for this value, without the prefix. Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 10:43, 3 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hey! Thanks! Actually, I have seen a bot come through and fix this -- but am trying to be better about doing it right when I first enter the data, or when I see it. Sadads (talk) 22:46, 3 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
Sounds good. I was thinking that a bot ought to be able to check for this, so I'm glad to know there is one. --Auntof6 (talk) 08:29, 4 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Sadads! The picture shows the former actor Christina Lindberg (Q458230), not the singer Christina Lindberg (Q532934) . /Annika64 (talk) 21:01, 21 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Please be more careful with your edits

edit

Because you created a completely incorrect link to a commons category which I had on my watchlist, I had a look at your recent edits and found many more errors. You should really check what you are linking. Just because the names of two items sound similar, it does not mean, they are identical. --Rodomonte (talk) 20:45, 24 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Rodomonte: I don't know what happened there because those look like the kinds of ones I automatically skip or say no to when playing the Wikidata game. I must have had my fingers in the wrong place or something on my phone or computer. Sadads (talk) 02:14, 26 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

And again: Please be more careful with your edits!

edit

The person shown is NOT Dora Kallmus! It's just a model for Krieser's hat, photographed by d'Ora. The file name is misleading! The caption for this image has been changed by me. Moreover, the model wearing the hat does not look like a 30-year-old woman, the age the photographer had at the time of shooting! Also the source link is labeled as follows: D'ORA Ein Hut, entworfen vom Maler Krieser Wien (D'ORA A hat, designed by the painter Krieser Wien) And NOT: d'Ora in a hat, designed by the painter Krieser). So please read everything more closely the next time, before the picture that has already been removed from me will be used again in this object FALSE, thank you. -- Walter Anton (talk) 00:55, 3 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Walter Anton: it seems that the image needs to be renamed then... because otherwise its going to keep misleading people. Sadads (talk) 11:02, 3 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Incnis Mrsi First that was two years ago, second that is a very odd edit for me, so it probably was a copy-paste error in Tabernacle, third: if you are going to be insulting on first encounter with another editor this is not the right community for you.
