Requests for new languages/Wikisource Georgian

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
submitted verification final decision

This proposal has been approved.
The Board of Trustees and language committee have deemed that there is sufficient grounds and community to create the new language project.

A committee member provided the following comment:

  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Proposal
Language code ka (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name Georgian Language name in English
Language name ქართული Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ...
Language Wikidata item Q8108 - item has currently the following values:
Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed.
Directionality LTR Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)?
Links Links to previous requests, or references to external websites or documents.

Settings
Project name ვიკიწყარო "Wikisource" in your language
Project namespace ვიკიწყარო usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace ვიკიწყაროს განხილვა "Wikisource talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads no Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings
Project logo File:Wikisource-logo-ka.svg This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation).
Default project timezone Asia/Tbilisi "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces "Page" > "გვერდი", "Page talk" > "გვერდის განხილვა", "Index" > "ინდექსი", "Index talk" > "ინდექსის განხილვა", "Author" > "ავტორი", "Author talk" > "ავტორის განხილვა". For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings Anything else that should be set
Once settings are finalized, a committee member will submit a Phabricator task requesting creation of the wiki. (This will include everything automatically, except the additional namespaces/settings.) After the task is created, it should be linked to in a comment under "final decision" above.

Hello my dear wikimedians, Georgian language is one of the older languages in the world, Georgian Language has its alphabet, there are more than 2050 pages in our wikisource. Main Page is ready, to, and Georgian wikimedians will make logo. Ok, good bye, I think it is good to make georgian wikisource, because there are many writters in Georgia, and there were, such as Ilia Chavchavaze, Shota Rustaveli, Akaki Tsereteli, Galaktion Tabize and etc. They were great persons and writters, they were patriots of the country, such as Ilia Chavchavaze killed by rebels.

Old but good argument: Georgian is the most pervasive of the South Caucasian languages, a family that also includes Svan and Megrelian and Laz . The Georgian alphabet is traditionally said to have been invented in the 5th century BC and reformed by King Parnavaz I of Iberia in 284 BC. Most modern scholarship puts its origin date at some time in the 5th century AD, when the earliest examples can be found. Generally speaking the most ancient Georgian written book is the Martyrdom of the Holy Queen Shushanik (also translated as The Passion of Saint Shushanik; Georgian: წამებაჲ წმიდისა შუშანიკისი დედოფლისაჲ, C’amebay C’midisa Shushanikisi Dedop’lisay) is the first extant piece of Georgian literature. Purported to have been written between 476 and 483, the earliest surviving manuscript dates from the 10th century. The author is Iakob Tsurtaveli (Jacob of Tsurtavi).

At this moment 100% of MediaWiki (most important messages) is translated. Also 97% of MediaWiki core and 100% of Translatewiki.net is done. What else is needed to get approved? --OpusDEI (talk) 13:06, 27 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

MediaWiki core is at 91%, so while I would like that to get to 100%, that's enough for me. However, I do think that the 15 messages of the Extension "Proofread Page" do need to be finished. StevenJ81 (talk) 14:54, 11 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, User:ანანო_ბუბუტეიშვილი, User:Nikaparunashvili, User:მარი_ხინგავა, User:SabaG23, MiQo08K. I am pinging you as active users in this project. For the final approval of the wiki, please fill out the Settings in the table at the top of this page. We need the namespace translations, also for the Wikisource-specific namespaces. --MF-W 07:50, 20 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@MF-Warburg hello. I added all the necessary data to the settings table. Let me know if something missing. Kindly, – Mehman (WMGE) 12:16, 21 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, User:Mehman (WMGE). I have a question about the "project talk" namespace translation. Is it the equivalent of "Wikisource talk"? I'm wondering because it looks to me to be only one word, and shorter than the translation for "Wikisource". --MF-W 18:13, 21 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello. Generally, all talk pages in Georgian are called “განხილვა”, but in this particular case it will be "ვიკიწყაროს განხილვა". I will change it on settings table accordingly. – Mehman (WMGE) 07:40, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
