Without returning the article quotes the author infringes copyright. This is contrary to U.S. law and Slovak.

If some of the content in the article violates copyright laws, then remove that part. If all the content in the article is an infringement of copyright, then place a {{delete}} tag on the article stating the reason on the talk page. Just blanking out content in articles is not the proper way to deal with such situations. --Glaisher (talk) 09:22, 24 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Glaisher, and thanks for reverting vandalism on simple.wiki (and others)! Is reverting vandalism the only thing you do over there? Well, you can help simple.wiki more at the "Wikipedia Backlog" page, doing those tasks are really appreciated. :) --~ curtaintoad ~~ talk ~ 10:34, 1 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

oldtimerplus.de

German Wikibooks don't see oldtimerplus.de as spam. Check Diskussion:Traktorenlexikon. We don't want to be disturbed by people that don't understand German nor our arguments why this link is accepted.

[edit]

Out of curiosity, did that script break the link for you on Monobook? If not, are you sure you either used debug=true or cleared your cache, etc.? PiRSquared17 (talk) 16:58, 29 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Cleared my cache and tried whether it works. Guess what? Blending-in does work in Monobook and other skins too. BTW, thanks for autopatrol. :) --Glaisher [talk] 17:11, 29 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Glaisher, thanks for helping out at my user talk page on the Wikimedia UK wiki. Fortunately, it wasn't vandalism. At a workshop introducing people to Wikipedia edit I asked people to leave a message on my talk page and I hadn't got round to tidying up. Lista krajów Europy wg powierzchni

[edit]

Hi, i created this page and it was tagged to be quickly deleted. This page is not in English, but it was translated from English to fill up the gap of the List of European countries by area. There is a link to this page in one of the beginning paragraphs. Please, do not delete this page, cos it is very useful for Polish users.

Please let me know, how to resolve this problem. And also how to add this link to the one of the language versions of [[3]]

Best wishes, Asia

It has already been deleted from Simple English Wikipedia as that project is only for articles written in Simple English. However, you can start that article at . --Glaisher [talk] 12:28, 13 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

dinsdags

[edit]

Hi Glaisher, you proposed to delete wikt:nl:Overleg:'s dinsdags and wikt:nl:Overleg:'s donderdags. I reverted you because

  1. you don't speak Dutch
  2. you don't recognize http://taaladvies.net/ and http://ans.ruhosting.nl/

Especially ANS (Algemene Nederlandse Spraakkunst) is a useful resource. It regularly tells me something about my Dutch, which I didn't know (apart from speaking Dutch just like they describe). If you have good reasons to want to suppress my assessment, please state them. --80.114.178.7 18:16, 20 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Global UP?

[edit]

Did you try it? It's currently beta, and might produce some errors. (You should visit Special:Blankpage/globalsul first, to make sure you are logged in everywhere) PiRSquared17 (talk) 17:27, 24 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

No, I haven't tried it yet. Is it possible to create/edit talk page with the tool? --Glaisher [talk] 18:05, 25 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
It should be now (purge cache) if it says 'v0.2' at the top of the field box. If it says v0.1 or doesn't have any version, it's broken. Please note that the skip list uses a format like: en.wikipedia,it.*,*.wikiquote and that you should probably add a newline or two to the end of the textbox if you use "prepend" (or to the beginning if you use "append"), so that it's on a new line. See User:PiRSquared17/Global_UP. PiRSquared17 (talk) 19:02, 25 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
I ran the script a while ago from abwiki to am.wikt. No errors :-) I can't think of any modifications to my user/talk pages right now but sooner or later I will probably run the script on all the wikis. P.S. don't you think there should be a pause button somewhere? --Glaisher [talk] 09:17, 26 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
@PiRSquared17: For some reason I see no possibility to select "skip all existing pages" in the drop-down menu of "What should be done to existing pages?". Is there no possibility to skip them other than pasting a huge list of existing pages to "Skip wikis:" or do I just overlook something? Vogone talk 12:14, 26 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
Seems fixed. Vogone talk 13:46, 30 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Averater; You could undo the blocks yourself since you're a local sysop. And err, why are you allowing them to vandalize in main namespace? Sandbox or another experimenting page would be better, imo. --Glaisher [talk] 12:03, 14 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades... (our budget is smaller than Commons)

Glaisher, congratulations! You now have the rights of an administrator on Meta. Please take a moment to read the Meta:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat, and Meta:Requests for deletion, but also Talk:Spam blacklist and Talk:Interwiki map), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings, or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-admin @ irc.freenode.net. You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading although it doesn't always completely apply here at Meta.

Please also check or add your entry to Meta:Administrators#List of administrators and the Template:List of administrators.

Please don't state wrong facts like e. g. here. This isn't very nice behaviour, especially on a sysop-protected page and might confuse other editors who now think zhwiki is a GS wiki, though it isn't. Kthxbai, Vogone talk 23:10, 29 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Letter petitioning WMF to reverse recent decitions

[edit]

The Wikimedia Foundation recently created a new feature, "superprotect" status. The purpose is to prevent pages from being edited by elected administrators -- but permitting WMF staff to edit them. It has been put to use in only one case: to protect the deployment of the Media Viewer software on German Wikipedia, in defiance of a clear decision of that community to disable the feature by default, unless users decide to enable it.

If you oppose these actions, please add your name to this letter. If you know non-Wikimedians who support our vision for the free sharing of knowledge, and would like to add their names to the list, please ask them to sign an identical version of the letter on change.org.

I'm notifying you because you participated in one of several relevant discussions. -Pete F (talk) 22:07, 20 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Superprotect letter update

[edit]

Hi Glaisher,

Along with more hundreds of others, you recently signed Letter to Wikimedia Foundation: Superprotect and Media Viewer, which I wrote.

Today, we have 562 signatures here on Meta, and another 61 on change.org, for a total of 623 signatures. Volunteers have fully translated it into 16 languages, and begun other translations. This far exceeds my most optimistic hopes about how many might sign the letter -- I would have been pleased to gain 200 siguatures -- but new signatures continue to come.

I believe this is a significant moment for Wikimedia and Wikipedia. Very rarely have I seen large numbers of people from multiple language and project communities speak with a unified voice. As I understand it, we are unified in a desire for the Wikimedia Foundation to respect -- in actions, in addition to words -- the will of the community who has built the Wikimedia projects for the benefit of all humanity. I strongly believe it is possible to innovate and improve our software tools, together with the Wikimedia Foundation. But substantial changes are necessary in order for us to work together smoothly and productively. I believe this letter identifies important actions that will strongly support those changes.

Have you been discussing these issues in your local community? If so, I think we would all appreciate an update (on the letter's talk page) about how those discussions have gone, and what people are saying. If not, please be bold and start a discussoin on your Village Pump, or in any other venue your project uses -- and then leave a summary of what kind of response you get on the letter's talk page.

Finally, what do you think is the right time, and the right way, to deliver this letter? We could set a date, or establish a threshold of signatures. I have some ideas, but am open to suggestions.

Thank you for your engagement on this issue, and please stay in touch. -Pete F (talk) 18:11, 26 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Blocks and censorship

[edit]

Should the involved user ask for unblock, please feel free to reduce or lift the block. I do not think anything was censored, still revenge and unmotivated "strong opposes" are quite distant from the collaborative nature of this wiki and really unadapted to any people offering some unharmful work that doesn't even require flag and further responsibilities. Advice

[edit]
Showing 'no'

Please be more careful while doing things you are totally unfamiliar with[6]. The language code "no" for instance does not even exist. Vogone (talk) 22:43, 20 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

There is no way to preview it. Either way, 'nb' and 'no' were both included--at least one of them is valid. I don't think you can call this a user error. The software should validate each language code. PiRSquared17 (talk) 23:18, 20 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Actually, the software even suggests using 'no' as a language code. PiRSquared17 (talk) 23:28, 20 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Then there's a bug with the software. But everyone knows 'nb' is right, esp. when 'nb' was even included already before Glaisher on top unnecessarily added 'no'. Regards, Vogone (talk) 07:28, 21 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
I was copying and pasting from the one at github as some languages were recently added. I didn't just paste it as it was; in fact, I double checked and modified some but unfortunately I missed this one. I've now removed 'no'. Thanks for telling. --Glaisher (talk) 10:58, 21 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Basque Wikipedia

Hi Glaisher, I´m a basque wikipedian. One question: in the left side of Basque Wikipedia's Main Page, we have a very long list of links of Wikipedias in other languages (Beste hizkuntzak), but we want a most practical and aesthetic way to put that long list in a smaller space with a scroll box, like for example in the way of Czech Wikipedia but we don´t know how to do it. Maybe we have to change something here? Do you know how to do it? Thanks and regards. Euskaldunaa (Euskaldunaa) 8:32, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

In the discussion at Commons:Commons:Bureaucrats/Requests/Odder (de-bureaucrat) you have expressed an opinion that Odder's bureaucrat status should be kept or removed, but you did not express the reasoning behind that opinion. Where to propose technical features

[edit]

Hi. I'd like to make a proposal about streamlining the way pages are tagged for deletion, but I don't know where to initiate such a discussion. mw: doesn't seem to be the right place, and Requests for comment here on meta seems to be more policy-oriented, while this is a more technical question. I have translated Oversight policy/Requests for oversight. But a chunk from "English Wikipedia" to "Wikidata" is not translated yet. Where is it transcluded from? And is there an ability to see from what pages is text taken to not ask you again? --Tohaomg (9th of March 2015, 14:35 UTC)
The section headers are not translatable in that page. Usernames shouldn't be translated and "email" link depends on the interface language rather than page language. If you want to see which pages are transcluded on to a page, you can always check the source code of the en page. Glaisher (talk) 15:58, 9 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Global User Page: Question/Request

[edit]

Hi, Glaisher.

It seems to me that to be useful, a global user page would contain, at least:

  • Babel
  • A "this is a [global] user page" template
  • Possibly, a User SUL Box

Babel already autotranslates, and I managed to figure out pretty decent coding to show -0 language facility when my meta page transcludes to a wiki where I don't speak the language (Hindi or Hawaiian, say). It seems to me, though, that there ought to be a wide variety of translations for the other two templates, so that they appear in the right language. There are on Commons, for example, and I played around with those a little. But I got the impression over there that there aren't plans to do the same thing here at Meta. Is there a reason for that? It seems like a lot of the infrastructure for it is in place already at Commons, and that it would mostly be a matter of importing things over here. (I don't suggest that's a trivial exercise, only that it's a mechanical one.) Can you enlighten me any further? Thanks. StevenJ81 (talk) 23:32, 27 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

The templates here aren't localizable because no one has bothered to do that yet (Mostly because the editing community here is very small compared to the community at Commons). I might try to make some userboxes here translatable if I've spare time to look at it (no promises though ;-)). It would be easy to make the userboxes translatable but, I imagine, it will be difficult to maintain backwards compatability due to the way Translate extension works. Regards, --Glaisher (talk) 11:09, 28 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. That helps.
Does the core MediaWiki software automatically switch out a template that has a {{template/langcode}} subpage? Alternatively, does #switchlang work here? I don't understand how the Translate extension works, but I do understand how to create subpages and how to use switchlang to bring in variants. StevenJ81 (talk) 14:12, 28 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
I don't know of a #switchlang parser function but we do have {{LangSwitch}}, {{TNT}}, and {{Dynamite}} which provides basic functionality for switching subpage depending on the language. Also there is a #translation parser function which will return "/langcode". --Glaisher (talk) 15:11, 28 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
I might have gotten the name wrong. Sorry. In any case, Will look into those. Thanks. StevenJ81 (talk) 15:50, 28 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Request for help

[edit]

Hi,

Seasons Greetings, I was looking for following help and user Billinghurst suggested me that taking your view on following may be helpful hence this request.

I am requesting your view and guidance at at :mediawiki:Thread:Project:Support_desk/Whether_edit_filters_do_count_preview_actions.

What I am trying to find out In brief:
Edit action hits which are only flagged or tagged by a filter (but without warn or disallow) are usually (technically) are supposed to get saved. But prima facia we are coming across instances where in few such edits are not getting saved.
Why I am trying to find out :
If the 'edit filter extension' counts, 'user edit actions preceding of pressing save buttons (actions like preview action), then there remains a chance of Edit filters based on number of user edit actions or filters with rate limit may malfunction ocasionally.(nl wikipedia and mr wikipedia have reported some bugs as some edit filters may not be functioning as expected in this respect)
At en wikipedia:
I have listed few such likely instance at Wikipedia:Edit_filter/False_positives/Reports#Study_of_hits_and_false_positives. I need your support in administrative preview of listed instances to confirm that if any blacklisting or any other action might have stopped those edit actions from getting saved. If not then those can be usefull for further technical/bug study

If I can get your support then I can dig further to list more such instances at en wikipedia, and bring doubtfull hits to technical discussion and report at respective bugs wherever necessary. Secondly, I would likely to know, If you are aware of any discussion has already taken place at en wikipedia about above mentioned aspects.

Thanks and Regards Mahitgar (He who knows ,wants to know and and loves to keep others informed) (talk) 06:11, 11 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Lots of things could happen to prevent the edit from being saved. I don't know the internal details of AbuseFilter much so I can't really say a definitive reason. Usually when I see hits like this, it's a spambot trying to edit but gets prevented by the spam blacklist. That's just one example of why it could fail but if you can't find a reason why it could be prevented, then it might indeed be a bug. --Glaisher (talk) 11:48, 11 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your valuable feedback, as of now, most wiki spam blacklists are likely to be roman script centric so to get clear cut example for the bug may be I will need to search more such examples from non-roman script wikipedias. This job needs to be done just using eyeballs, no view for private filters so job remains to be cumbersome but to have fullproof filters we shall need to conduct study. I will see if I can get any support from global sysops for this search. Thanks again.

@Pmlineditor: Hi. I was aware that there were many FPs from the filter but the filter's conditions had to be broad due to the amount of spam we were receiving. Since I have been quite busy, I haven't been able to help out much but it looks like the attack has died down now. @Shanmugamp7: Could you confirm that? If it is it a manageable level now and if the FP rate is still high, I would recommend setting it to logging-only mode. Best regards, --Glaisher (talk) 11:05, 2 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Can't log into my user accounts

[edit]

By Lesabendio. Thanks a lot, Glaisher, for raising the task priority of my problem ((here). I gather it is a rare one as only two other users seem to have it. This is also to ask you to leave a message on my English or my German user talk page https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benutzer_Diskussion:Lesabendio when it is fixed. If the fixing takes weeks or if it - God forbid - should turn out to be unfixable I would open a new account "Lesabendio2" or so. Season's greetings -- Lesabendio aka 146.60.215.144 18:13, 14 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi. The root issue will probably be very difficult to find here and will take some time but we could probably manually fix the accounts easily. I'll try to poke someone who can do that. Regards, --Glaisher (talk) 05:01, 15 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
I checked today: Lo and behold - there I am again! Thanks so much for fixing. Happy Christmas to you and the other phabricators who worked that miracle -- Lesabendio (talk) 11:38, 23 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

CUCount tool

[edit]

Hi! If a cu has performed for example at 22:40, 30 November 2015 your tool will count it for December. Is that something to do with time zones? Also, it would be nice if it could show the results in alphabetical order. --Stryn (talk) 19:31, 3 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Stryn: Hi. Sorry about the delay in replying (I'm currently on vacation and was just popping into check on things). There was indeed an issue with time calculation due to timezone differences. Thanks for informing me about this. I have now fixed it to use UTC. While at it, I've also added a total count to make it easier to count the total for each month. Hopefully, I'll work on making it sortable after I get back. Regards, --Glaisher (talk) 17:08, 9 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Stryn: Hi again. I've now implemented a sortable table for outputting the statistics. Can you check whether it works properly now? --Glaisher (talk) 09:56, 16 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thank you so much, works perfectly now! --Stryn (talk) 13:33, 16 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Translate debugging

[edit]

Thanks for your work on phabricator:T53731. Here you're not just fixing an important bug, you also taught me something on how to be a better contributor and a better person. I wasted quite an amount of time across the years on that bug, which I could instead have employed all at once to look for the solution in the correct place. Thank you again, Nemo 07:01, 26 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Yes, I do speak Dhivehi language. I left out the last part "May the Force be with you!" as I'm not sure how to exactly translate it but I can add an approximate translation if you want that. --Glaisher (talk) 15:52, 27 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Attawapiskat First Nation

[edit]

Re: Wikipedia Outreach: Please see this topic on Jimbo's talk page. I am contacting our chapters in Canada, Argentina and Finland for us all to work together to reach out to the vulnerable youth at Attawapiskat First Nation to promote Wikipedia editing and other wiki projects. I am very good on the phone so that is where I can be of most use. Right now I have a vision, subject to change should you having different ideas, of 1 or more of us using email and/or telephone and or Skype to communicated directly with individuals, groups, and local teachers promoting and illustrating how much fun and education they can have through Wiki editing. Please communicate back to me via my talk page as time is of the essence I think. Nocturnalnow (talk) 15:32, 18 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Request for Input - New Central Notice request process

[edit]

Hello!

Back in February I emailed the CN-admin list regarding part of my role to look into the Central Notice process and see where we could make improvements including: the campaign process; its functionality or lack thereof; and fundamentally the documentation that supports it. You can see many of the issues that I identified at CentralNotice/Process_Review. If there is anything additional that you feel has been left out then please feel free to leave any comments on the talk page.

My first task is to improve the requesting of campaigns by communities and affiliates. I am looking to set up a more formal request process, similar to those used in many projects. The aim is to: increase the transparency of Central Notice; improve the support provided to affiliates (including making such support more consistent); to provide a forum for community input into campaigns.

I have been working on a very rough strawman version of the process and I would be interested in hearing you comments about what such a process should involve and what you think it would require. Please feel free to leave such comments at the process talk page section. I would like to have a working page in place by the end of May. This would not need to be a final version. The process can be improved upon over time as we learn about how well it works.

Given your role as a Meta Administrator who is active in the area of Central Notice, I encourage you to:

Regards

Issue on EnWiki

[edit]

Dear Glaisher, I see you are online, hope you can help me out with an issue with my account on en.wikipedia.org. During my last edit there, I made an error, and submitted a javascript to my user subpage w:en:User:Dan Koehl/common.js, which makes me looping around once I enter Enwiki, can you just please revert my last edit, or go back in the history and save the version before I inserted that javascript, thanks,

I think this was the evil script, which makes it impossible for me to enter EnWiki:

Latest revision as of 06:36, 2 June 2016 javascript:window.location='//tools.wmflabs.org/commonshelper/?interface=en&language='+wgContentLanguage+'+&image='+wgTitle+'&commonsense=1&remove_categories=1&tusc_user=YOUR_USERNAME&tusc_password=YOUR_PASSWORD&reallydirectupload=1'

Thanks, Dan Koehl (talk) 09:42, 2 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Dan Koehl: I'm not a sysop at English Wikipedia so I can't revert that edit. However you can try disabling JavaScript on your browser temporarily and then revert that edit. Let me know if you need help with that (Google is also usually quite helpful). Regards, --Glaisher (talk) 09:45, 2 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your advice, I totally forgot that simple solution inactivating javascript. Issue solved Dan Koehl (talk) 09:51, 2 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
[edit]

Thank you for helping on this over at phabricator. Your responses, and what I saw in the merged item, showed me enough that I was able to create the workarounds on ladwiki (by copying the messages into /lad and /en subpages). I'm still going to be interested in the outcome of the task, of course, but for practical purposes I have my fix. StevenJ81 (talk) 14:13, 9 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

translatewiki:Translation UX feedback

[edit]

Hi, this page has a lot of response from translators who was never acted upon. You have a good intuition of what can get merged by the developers, maybe you can manage to select some actionable items there and submit phabricator reports or patches? Nemo 12:33, 18 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi Nemo_bis. As you may have noticed, I have mostly been focusing on page translation bugs the past few weeks mainly because Special:Translate/tux code is quite fragile. I have filed phab:T136854 about this with the hope that we will be able to get it done in the not-so long term future. It will definitely be a huge undertaking and would require lot of time, so no promises from me but if that is resolved, I hope that it would be easier to get bugs fixed easily. The fact that we have 80+ tasks open in tux (many of them which are rather severe) for such a highly used interface has also been bothering me for a while and is quite sad. However, I don't expect to be able to work on Translate bugs in the coming weeks as I have exams soon and after that I will be on an extended vacation. Perhaps after I get back, I will have some time to take a look at these things. Regards, --Glaisher (talk) 17:03, 18 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Common.js

[edit]

Hi Glaisher. Sorry to bother you again. I wonder if you could please take a look at MediaWiki:Common.js. In the lines 406 et seq. there was a script so that global block form marked by default the "anon. only" option (the blocking steward can later uncheck it if it wants). However it is not working anymore. I wonder if you could please take a look at it when you have time and fix it? Also, I've noticed no issues with the global suppress script that you created. Please let me know if we can add it to the Gadgets so I can announce my fellow stewards to start using it instead of the old one. Best regards, —MarcoAurelio 10:43, 13 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

@MarcoAurelio: I have rewritten the code which does that and it should work now. As a side question, do you know why it's not done directly on the server-side? Regarding the suppress script, if there are no issues with it, I'm fine with enabling it by default for all stewards. Regards, --Glaisher (talk) 12:11, 13 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
Hi. Many thanks for the rewrite and no, I don't know why it's not done directly server-side as it happens with the normal local blocks. Maybe I should fill a task for that. Best regards, —MarcoAurelio 08:48, 14 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

Hi,

You’re getting this message because you participated in the 2015 Community Wishlist Survey and we want to make sure you don't miss it this year – or at least can make the conscious choice to ignore if it you want to. The 2015 survey decided what the Community Tech team should work on during 2016. It was also the focus of Wikimedia hackathons and work by other developers. You can see the status of wishes from the 2015 wishlist at 2015 Community Wishlist Survey/Results.

The 2016 Community Wishlist Survey is now open for wishes. You can create proposals until November 20. You will be able to vote on which wishes you think are best or most important between November 28 and December 12. /Johan (WMF) (talk) via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 11:17, 14 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
