Letter petitioning WMF to reverse recent decitions
[edit]The Wikimedia Foundation recently created a new feature, "superprotect" status. The purpose is to prevent pages from being edited by elected administrators -- but permitting WMF staff to edit them. It has been put to use in only one case: to protect the deployment of the Media Viewer software on German Wikipedia, in defiance of a clear decision of that community to disable the feature by default, unless users decide to enable it.
If you oppose these actions, please add your name to this letter. If you know non-Wikimedians who support our vision for the free sharing of knowledge, and would like to add their names to the list, please ask them to sign an identical version of the letter on change.org.
I'm notifying you because you participated in one of several relevant discussions. -Pete F (talk) 22:18, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
Thank you
[edit]Thank you for your participation in reviewing the Project Grant for the position Wikipedian in Residence at the University of Pittsburgh. I am not posting this thank you simply because you endorsed the project but I believe that community feedback has made this Project better. Please feel free to give additional feedback regarding this grant on the talk page if you would like.

JSTOR account redistribution (The Wikipedia Library)
[edit]Hi - according to our records you received a free account for JSTOR through The Wikipedia Library. Because we’ve used up all of our allocated accounts, and it’s been some time since they were distributed, we want to redistribute any accounts that aren’t being used to users on our waitlist.
If you’re still using, or plan to use, your JSTOR access, no problem! Simply head over to the Library Card platform, log in, and request a renewal of your account. You should be able to do this from your user page, or the JSTOR signup page. If you can’t find the renewal button, or have any other issues or questions about this, please feel free to leave a message on my talk page. We’ll begin redistributing inactive accounts in September; if you request renewal after then we will only be able to reactivate your account if we have spots remaining. Thanks, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:32, 20 August 2018 (UTC)
The Community Wishlist Survey
[edit]Hi,
You get this message because you’ve previously participated in the Community Wishlist Survey. I just wanted to let you know that this year’s survey is now open for proposals. You can suggest technical changes until 11 November: Community Wishlist Survey 2019.
You can vote from November 16 to November 30. To keep the number of messages at a reasonable level, I won’t send out a separate reminder to you about that. /Johan (WMF) 11:24, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
Extended to Dec: Wikipedia Asian Art Month with Metropolitan Museum of Art

And if you're one of the grand prize winners, you'll get a Met guidebook or Asian art publication.--Pharos (talk) 21:32, 5 December 2018 (UTC)
"Who Wrote That" project update
[edit]Hello. I'm reaching out to you as you participated in the 2017 Community Wishlist proposal for "Who Wrote That" project (previously known as "Blame Tool"). The Community Tech team is kicking things off on the project and we have an early-stage mockup available for you to look at. I invite you to follow that project page, where I will be posting periodic status updates for the project. You are also welcome to provide your thoughts on the talk page. Thank you. -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 22:57, 21 February 2019 (UTC)
Hey PKM... a few days ago, i released this new proposal called WikiDirect, and it has been lacking opinions, can you maybe give me your idea about the proposal? thank you... Arep Ticous 05:45, 17 September 2019 (UTC)
The 2021 Community Wishlist Survey is now open! This survey is the process where communities decide what the Community Tech team should work on over the next year. We encourage everyone to submit proposals until the deadline on 30 November, or comment on other proposals to help make them better. The communities will vote on the proposals between 8 December and 21 December.
The Community Tech team is focused on tools for experienced Wikimedia editors. You can write proposals in any language, and we will translate them for you. Thank you, and we look forward to seeing your proposals!

WCNA Virtual
[edit]Hi there, would you be interested in doing a short session on Friday December 11 on what we did for Wiki Loves Fashion? Might be a good way to talk about an aspect of GLAM that is often forgotten - fashion, textiles, etc. Thanks! -- Fuzheado (talk) 15:26, 30 November 2020 (UTC)

WikiConference North America 2020 registration
[edit]Thank you for signing up to attend WikiConference North America 2020! If you haven't already, it would be much appreciated if you could also take a minute to register through our form at register.wcna.wiki. While not required, this will help us keep you informed via email, and will also help give us an idea of attendance numbers over the next three days. Thank you, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 19:07, 10 December 2020 (UTC)
We invite all registered users to vote on the 2021 Community Wishlist Survey. You can vote from now until 21 December for as many different wishes as you want.
In the Survey, wishes for new and improved tools for experienced editors are collected. After the voting, we will do our best to grant your wishes. We will start with the most popular ones.
We, the Community Tech, are one of the Wikimedia Foundation teams. We create and improve editing and wiki moderation tools. What we work on is decided based on results of the Community Wishlist Survey. Once a year, you can submit wishes. After two weeks, you can vote on the ones that you're most interested in. Next, we choose wishes from the survey to work on. Some of the wishes may be granted by volunteer developers or other teams.
We are waiting for your votes. Thank you!

Auxiliary data matcher
[edit]Good afternoon! I want to know more about how Auxiliary data matcher works and are doing in Mix 'n' Match. Can you help? --Pmt (talk) 17:48, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- @Pmt: Per the Mix'n'match/Manual "... 'auxiliary matcher' will check the dataset for additional identifiers such as VIAF IDs and check them against existing records in Wikidata." I don't know any more about how it works than that.- PKM (talk) 21:37, 14 February 2021 (UTC)

Wikisporadic Newsletter: August 2021
[edit]Wikisporadic, an Occasional Newsletter for our Germinating Community.
- The Wikipore Day Unconference was held in July, with about 20 participants - see etherpad. A suggested path forward is the "movement tactic" of regular collaborations, like a Spore of the Month or a Feature of the Fortnight.
- Some newer proposed projects at Wikispore: STARDIT (using mw:Extension:Cargo), Works Spore, WikiCite. (Comment on their talk pages!)
- On Saturday August 14, there will be a Wikimania lightning talk on Wikispore and Innovating Free Knowledge at , followed a few minutes later by an unconference group session for Wikimedians Innovating New Genres.
(You can subscribe/unsubscribe from future notifications for the Wikisporadic Newsletter by adding or removing your name from this list.)
Feedback on any of these items is welcomed at your friendly Wikispore Greenhouse!

Wikisporadic Newsletter: September 2022
[edit]Wikisporadic, an Occasional Newsletter for our Germinating Community.
- Oral knowledge We held a session on oral knowledge and Wikispore as part of Options Space at Wikimedia Summit 2022 in Berlin, looking at options with several African affiliates to link out to cultural topics from Wikipedia(s). Some African communities are already doing oral knowledge documentation like the Nigerian community working on oral history as well as the growing Mozambican community working on oral history documentation in Makhuwa language. This is a way to provide more sources as well as digitize some oral parts of their history.
- Wikidata integration There is a plan to install the new UnlinkedWikibase extension, advancing the vision of Wikisprout and full Wikidata integration such as use in infoboxes.
- Movement strategy Using the Cargo and related extensions on Wikispore, work is underway to create a demo of Movement Strategy activities, adapting Baserow data from Wikimedia Summit.
- Halloween event As a Wikidata 10th Birthday event, there is hope to collaborate at the end of October with Wiki Cemeteries User Group on Grave Spore (see discussion), for maps and in-depth coverage of individual graves.

GLAM collaboration projects / Photography in LA
[edit]Hello,
I do posts, videos, and other educational resources on Mesoamerican (Aztec, Maya etc) history and archeology and have begun to also edit Wikipedia. I've also long taken photos at museum exhibits to eventually upload to Wikimedia.
I'm reaching out because I saw on your page you helped with a number of GLAM collaboration projects, and I'm wondering if you could potentially tell me more about those and how they are set up: There's a particular museum I know of which might potentially be interested in having some of their collection added to Wikimedia if they could get funding or other assistance, so I'm wondering if that sort of thing could happen. Or in other situations, Wikimedia contributing to negotiations or requests to get access to photograph pieces in shoots where a tripod etc may be allowed unlike just for normal visitors?
Secondly, I saw you were located in Los Angeles and were wondering if you knew any photographers who contribute to Wikimedia in the area who might be interested in taking photos of the Maya and Moche ceramics on display at the "Picture Worlds: Greek, Maya, and Moche Pottery" exhibit running at the Getty Villa, which is open till the end of the month.
Thank you!
MajoraZ (talk) 00:51, 10 July 2024 (UTC)
- You might want to join Wikimedians of Los Angeles and ask on their group talk page for a photographer to go to the Getty Villa with you. I’m not very active there anymore but there's lots of new active members.
- As far as how GLAM projects work, it varies widely. Usually an experienced Wikimedian will work with a museum to determine what their needs are. Sometimes the museum will pay a “Wikimedian in Residence” to help them, but there are other ways to work. You can ask at Wikimedians of LA to see if anyone is available (I’m not).
- There’s more information about GLAM projects at GLAM.
- Good luck! - PKM (talk) 05:13, 10 July 2024 (UTC)
