Scots conventions will be UK conventions

eedit

Although we may learn Scots to a greater or lesser extent, the native speakers are in the UK.
Scots is not an international language as English is.
English has 5 spelling standards: 2 UK, 2 Canadian, and 1 US.
The word "centre" is spelled "centre" in 4 of the 5 systems.
Therefore the "Scots" we are writing should conform to UK norms. So that implies: centre, manoeuvre, honour, colour, neighbour, traveller. For a Canadian, none of those represent a challenge.

Kerb. North Americans spell that "curb". Annexe, furore, axe. Americans tend to omit the final "e".
Practice is the noun; practise is the verb. Scots language probably conforms to that. Defence, offence, licence, pretence. The US likes -ense for those.

Punctuation. North America uses double " first and single ' second. The UK is the opposite.
Periods and commas with quotation marks. US goes for aesthetics; UK goes for logic. Canada officially favours US usage; I favour UK personally.

to omit the final "e".

In my earlier sentence, the period is logical -- "e". -- and that is the UK style. The US prefers to make it pretty -- "e." -- by putting the period inside, even though that makes no logical sense whatsoever.
So if we write Scots, we need to follow the UK's rules. Varlaam (talk) 22:07, 26 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

"Roond" errors

eedit

Those "roond" errors which were appearing in infoboxes everywhere beside Densitie were caused by translating the arithmetic operator keyword "round" into Scots in Template:Infobox settlement/permi2km2.

(Yo sé que eres cansado de "ayuda" de mí, pero ...)
You are the biggest contributor around here, both in terms of articles created and bytes set up.
I know that.
But will it be obvious to anyone else?
I think you deserve the credit you have earned by the contributions you have made. But as long as you have your split personality, there is no straightforward way for anyone else to do the math.
Sure, I can vouch for you, but it would be easier if someone could simply run the stats, and see, Oh yeah, this guy is a major player around here.
I wish you would just stick to Fixer and rack up your points here.
It bothers me that my tally exceeds yours, because I know that that is a totally and utterly false picture. It's a lie, and I don't like lies.
You have done way more work than me, so I would prefer to see your numbers better reflect that reality.

(in Inglis) I am thinking that the way we handle countries and subnational units are completely different.
So all we really need to say is:

Seem reasonable?
And I think I'm going to rename Pa., Va., and W. Va.

Hi Fixer88

I was asked by Wikimedia Foundation to promote this call for participation on the planned Universal Code of Conduct.

Best regards --Holder (tauk) 04:17, 14 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

At times, our contributor communities and projects have suffered from a lack of guidelines that can help us together create an environment where free knowledge can be shared safely without fear.

There has been talk about the need for a global set of conduct rules in different communities over time. Recently, Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees announced a Community Culture Statement, asking for new standards to address harassment and promote inclusivity across projects. [1]

The universal code of conduct will be a binding minimum set of standards across all Wikimedia projects, and will apply to all of us, staff and volunteers alike, all around the globe.. It is of great importance that we all participate in expressing our opinions and thoughts about UCoC and its values. We should think about what we want it to cover or include and what it shouldn’t include, and how it may create difficulties or help our groups.

This is the time to talk about it. Before starting drafting the code of conduct, we would like to hear from you and to solicit the opinions and feedback of your colleagues.

In order for your voice to be heard, we encourage and invite you to read more about the universal code of conduct (UCoC) [2] and then write down your opinions or feedback on the discussion page [3]. To reduce language barriers during the process, you are welcomed to translate the universal code of conduct english main page into your respective local language [4]. You and your community may choose to provide your opinions/feedback using your local languages.

Yer Scots ability

eedit

Hey there. It's become clear that ye've got little ability in Scots and are overreliant on a single dictionary that gives nae context for its listings. Words such as "aurie" and "perfaisional" only appear in that single dictionary and are absent from the Dictionary of the Scots Language (which gives context for its words) and the Scots Corpus (which gives examples of actual Scots texts), and -ed only becomes -it/t after certain letters, which dinnae include c (so annooncit is completely wrong and should be annoonced). It's nae as simple as relying on a dictionary to directly translate articles word for word, ignoring Scots grammar and idioms. It seems plain ye've nae bothered to read up on what's been happening, or ye'd realise that yer ignorance about the language been extremely harmful and led for calls for the entire wiki to be deleted, or that we've been trying to clear up the Scotchings that ye've reinserted. So please, for the sake of the wiki, stop and actually learn the language before continuing CiphriusKane (tauk) 09:18, 5 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
