Volkhov

Volkhov (Roushie: Во́лхов) is an industrial toun in Leningrad Oblast, Roushie, situatit 122 kilometre (76 mi) east o St. Petersburg, on the Volkhov River. Population: 46,596 (2002 Census);[4] 50,325 (1989 Census).[5]

History

The toun grew up durin the industrialization in the first hauf o the 20t century. The dounset o Zvanka wi a train depot wis biggit here, as the railway connectin St. Petersburg an Vologda wis constructit. A seicont rail line runnin north o the station towards Murmansk wis constructit in 1916, makkin the station an important railway junction. In 1918, construction o the Volkhov hydroelectric plant (the first in the Soviet Union) stairtit on this spot. In 1926 the pouer plant wis opened, an in 1932 the first Soviet aluminium plant wis launched nearbi. On 27 December 1933 the settlements servin the station, the dam, an the aluminium plant wur mergit wi several adjacent veelages tae form the toun o Volkhovstroy. In 1940, the toun wis gien its present name.[6]
