Robert Francis "Bob" McDonnell (born June 15, 1954) is an American politician. He was the 71st Governor of Virginia from 2010 to 2014. He was on the executive committee of the Republican Governors Association. He succeeded Rick Perry of Texas.[1]
McDonnell was a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army. He served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1993 to 2006. McDonnell was the Attorney General of Virginia from 2006 to 2009.
Personal life
[change | change source]McDonnell was born on June 15, 1954 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He studied at Notre Dame University, at Boston University, and at Regent University. McDonnell is married to Maureen Gardner. They have five children.
Corruption charges
[change | change source]On January 21, 2014, McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, were accused on federal corruption charges. They were convicted of most charges by a federal jury on September 4, 2014. McDonnell is the first Virginia governor to be indicted – and the first Virginia governor to be convicted of a felony.[2] McDonnell was sentenced on January 6, 2015 to two years in prison, followed by two years of supervised release.
