Defining sentence

Thanks for all your work around here! When you add defining sentences for verbs, don't use infinitives like to leave is to go away. Instead, use the verb in present or past tense, depending on how it is more commonly used.--Brett (talk) 21:17, 2 January 2018 (UTC)

Defining sentences are not just an arbitrary stylistic choice. If used well, they provide a good deal of information not only about the meaning of a word but about how a word is used. But you have to spend a good deal of time trying to understand how a word is used first. Consider your recent entry for prescribe. You wrote, If you prescribe, you... This tells the reader nothing. In fact, it suggests that prescribe is intransitive, because you haven't said, if you prescribe [object]. What is usually prescribed? Put that in the first clause. Now consider that you felt the need to add a second sentence saying who usually does the prescribing. Again, put that information into the first clause. Finally, prescribe is typically ditransitive, so include both the direct and indirect object. This gives you the much more useful sentence "If a doctor prescribes you a medicine or treatment, they tell you what medicine or treatment to use." --Brett (talk) 00:26, 14 February 2018 (UTC)
