Etymology 1

From Средњи Енглески first, furst, ferst, fyrst, from Стари Енглески fyrest, from Пра-Германски *furistaz (“foremost, first”), superlative of Пра-Германски *fur, *fura, *furi (“before”), from Proto-Indo-European *per-, *pero- (“forward, beyond, around”), equivalent to fore +‎ -est. Cognate with North Frisian foarste (“first”), Холандски voorste (“foremost, first”), Немачки Fürst (“chief, prince”, literally “first (born)”), Шведски först (“first”), Norwegian Nynorsk fyrst (“first”), Icelandic fyrstur (“first”).

Other cognates include Санскрт पूर्व (pūrva, “first”) and Руски первый (pervyj).
