Synopsis

MoversAndShakers Planter struck by lightning.jpg

Boulder plants "Leafy" in the ground. When he worries Leafy will be lonely, Graham and Cody point out that it's "Griffin Rock Plant a Tree Day", so a bunch of trees are about to be planted nearby to keep Leafy company. After a mercifully short speech, Mayor Luskey reveals the Power Planter, a droid which burrows underground and plants trees from below. Boulder asserts that only living things can care for living things. As Huxley Prescott demonstrates with his segment I Dare Me, the Power Planter is programmed to avoid heat sources, however a few minutes later, a stray bolt of lightning hits the invention, sending it wild. It begins pulling trees from the ground, and even rips an engine block out of a car. The Rescue Bots attempt to grab the drone out of the ground, though Boulder is distracted by having to save the uprooted Leafy and the Power Planter gets away.

Graham gives a postmortem of the damage to the planter back at the fire station, and the family hopes they won't see the drone again. Mayor Luskey attempts to relax in his hot tub, only to have a badger attempt to steal his toupée. His emergency phone call interrupts the Burns family's basketball game, but moments later a swarm of fleeing animals passes by the station. More calls about the animal infestation come in, and the team rolls to the rescue. They're soon hunting all manner of creatures around Griffin Rock. Chase and the Chief catch a groundhog, Boulder and Graham find a porcupine, and Kade and Heatwave pursue badgers. After clearing the mayor's yard, Dani and Blades help out with Cody's cockroach problem.

Reconvening after the emergency is over, the family figures that the critters must have been fleeing the Power Planter. At that moment, Mayor Luskey is attempting to return to his hot tub when he discovers the water heater has been destroyed, and the culprit — the Power Planter — promptly chases him into a tree. Dani and Blades arrive in response and attempt to lasso the Power Planter, only to be dragged along as it burrows underground. After it gets away, the team fishes the Mayor out of the tree. As they discuss the ruined water heater, Cody figures that the lightning reversed the planter's programming, and it's now going after heat sources. They figure they can track the machine with seismographs, and that it will be attracted to the hottest spots on the island. Splitting up, the team attempts to cover everywhere the device might go. The planter turns up at a Lad Pioneer camp out, where it tussles with Chase before making off with Chief's torch.

At the station, Cody spots a news report about a new rib smoker at the school. Unable to warn them by phone, Cody starts heading to the school in Rolling Thunder, only to plunge into the hole left by the Power Planter. As Cody drives through the tunnel, pursued by the planter, Boulder is able to grab him clean out of the ground, though his go-kart isn't so lucky. Changing tack, the Bots are equipped with Boil Coils from Doc Greene to lure the planter to them. The Power Planter dutifully turns up, and the Bots lead it on a chase towards a cliff. As Heatwave drives off, he's caught by Blades while the planter plunges to the ground far below. Boulder later replants Leafy, using the claws from the Power Planter to protect it, while Chief Burns finishes putting Rolling Thunder back together. When Mayor Luskey asks if it's safe to use his hot tub again, Chief insists on his family "testing" it first, and Luskey is left attempting to reclaim his toupée from a badger.

"How can you be so sure?"

Notes

Continuity notes

MoversAndShakers HUD comparison.jpg
  • Leafy was first introduced in "Walk on the Wild Side" when Boulder attempted to get a lion for a pet.
  • Huxley's "I Dare Me" segment premiered in "Rules and Regulations".
  • Blades uses a hook energize tool to lasso the Power Planter.
  • The HUD used by the Power Planter is extremely similar to the HUD used by the MorBot.

Real-world references

  • Chief Burns makes direct reference to Noah's Ark in response to the large number of wild animals in the city.
  • Chase and Chief compare trying to catch a groundhog with Whack-a-Mole.
  • As they hunt for badgers, Kade announces "We don't need no stinkin' badgers", a line from "Weird Al" Yankovic's film UHF, which was itself a reference to a line from the Mel Brooks film Blazing Saddles...which was itself a reference to the John Huston film The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.
  • The extended sequence of Blades jumping over the shark statue is an homage to an (in)famous episode of the series Happy Days in which the Fonz jumps over a shark on water skis. It has since become a popular phrase used to pinpoint when a TV show has run out of ideas.
  • The destruction of the Power Planter may be an homage to the film Tremors.
