Wikimedia UK Training the Trainers event, February 2014.

This event is for volunteers who want to take a leading role in Wikimedia UK's training programme. For initial queries contact katie.chanatwikimedia.org.uk.

Where and when

The workshop will take place on the weekend of 1—2 February 2014 in Cardiff, and it will be run by a professional consultant. This session is targeted at volunteers in Wales and the immediate surrounding areas. We are especially interested in editors of Wicipedia Cymraeg who work through the Welsh language. However, both English and Welsh language editors on all Wikimedia projects will be welcomed. The workshop itself will be delivered in English.

The timings of the event are: Saturday 9:30am — 6:30pm, Sunday 9am — 5pm. Light breakfast and lunch will be provided; we are also planning a social dinner after the training on Saturday. It is vital that you do not miss the start of the training session, so before confirming your availability please do make sure you can make the start time of the training. We are able to cover travel and accommodation, including if you need to travel on Friday - an advance notice will be appreciated.

The event is open to Wikimedia UK volunteers who can make a credible commitment to support training in future: it will be a strong advantage to have already been involved in other training events. If your interest is in training people to contribute to a sister project such as Commons or Wikinews, rather than to Wikipedia, that's no disadvantage.

Interested but not sure if this event is for you? Hear from the past participants here.

Aims

We know that some of our members are already delivering professional-quality training. They may think they don't need this weekend event, but it's especially important for them to sign up. It's a chance for you to:

  • Get accredited and receive detailed feedback about your presenting and training skills
  • Get general trainer skills which you can then apply when delivering specific Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons workshops etc.
  • Share your skills with others
  • Develop the ability to help design a training programme that serves Wikimedia UK in the long term

Places are limited to make sure that each participant gets individual attention and feedback, so please sign up below to express your interest.

Course details

The course focuses on enabling the participants to develop and deliver high quality training which draws on their own skills and expertise. You can then apply these skills whenever you run a training session. Note that this is about training, not presenting, so we will not be focusing on developing content of presentations on e.g. Wikipedia.

By the end of the course the participants will be able to:

  • Set training objectives and structure a session with appropriate material to meet those objectives
  • Present information clearly to different audiences and use visual aids effectively
  • Identify ways to make the sessions interactive and participative and deal with questions

As a part of the course you will also be receiving an hour long 1-1 telephone feedback. This provides the opportunity to discuss your performance and reactions to the course privately. It promotes intense reflection and rounded learning.

The participants will also be able to:

  • Recognise the importance of diversity in the training context
  • Respond appropriately to the needs of volunteer trainers
  • Understand the impact of different learning and communication styles when designing and delivering training
  • Use active listening to guide their interaction with participants
  • Give effective and appropriate feedback to other participants

Sign up here

Sign up for this event is now closed.

Please tell us about your training background (inside or outside Wikimedia) and give an email address or username through which you can be contacted. We will be contacting you closer to the date of the event to confirm your place (please note: this training represents an investment by Wikimedia in its future, so the decision will be made on the basis of how credibly each individual can commit to delivering future events. This is not a first-come, first-served list: the order in which people add themselves is of no significance.)

Please also let us know if the date does not suit you; we will be running future sessions.

  1. I'm interested in taking on this role & attending this event (I live near Bristol). On wiki I have nearly 9 years experience, 65,000 edits (including contributing to FAs FLs FPs etc) and created and coordinate a WikiProject. Recent work has included contributions to WLM. I presented at Bristol Wiki Academy 1. Off wiki I have an MA in Education & have worked for 25 years as a clinical teacher, lecturer etc in the NHS & Higher Education. Rodw (talk) 20:45, 9 October 2013 (UTC)
    • Still interested but can't confirm availability for Feb just yet.Rodw (talk) 17:48, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
Confirmed Yep I'm still interested and can come to Cardiff for 1st & 2nd Feb.Rodw (talk) 19:38, 17 December 2013 (UTC)
  2. Unfortunately, I missed previous events. However, I'm able to attend this one! Thanks for proposing this location. I'm still involved in recruiting others to edit, in connection with a WikiProject. Attending this training course would help me make the most of future events targeting potential editors. I'm in Bristol, so will be able to travel across to Cardiff on the Saturday morning. If there are accommodation places available for the Saturday night, I'd be interested in staying over in order to make the most of informal discussions with others. This could also result in a more productive outcome on Sunday, because I wouldn't lose 2-3 hours travelling home and back during the course. Thanks. -- Trevj (talk) 12:13, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
Ditto Rodw. Hope to confirm either way soon. -- Trevj (talk) 18:29, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
    Confirmed -- Trevj (talk) 08:43, 31 October 2013 (UTC)
As regards training background, I've hosted stands at a number of computing shows in recent years and have delivered some Q&A sessions to potential new editors at these events. I've also followed a PGCE teacher training course, including approx. 30 weeks spent teaching in primary schools and have assisted teaching at secondary level in a French school, taking my own classes. It sounds as if this course would be helpful in making my presence at future events more effective. I'm happy to extend my attendance to future events outside the computing area, my edits demonstrating abilities to create relatively high-quality content within various topic areas. -- Trevj (talk) 18:52, 12 January 2014 (UTC)
  3. Hello, Yes I would be interested, sorry its taken me a little while to get back to you. I think I might be able to stay with a friend on the friday and saturday night so hopefully no accomodation costs but I would definitely need travel expenses if that would still be okay? I'll let you know about travel when I've got it organized. Thanks Cutiekatie (talk) 22:05, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
  4. I am interested in this event, but I can't confirm my availability in February yet (possibly wont be able to until early January). I've been involved with Wikipedia and sister projects since December 2004 and have contributed in various ways pretty much continuously since then, including helping at the NRM editathon and I'll also be assisting at the Mining Institute in Newcastle editathon next month. I have extensive experience of assisting new users of various ages with various different computer packages on an informal basis dating back to at least the early-mid 1990s. I will almost certainly need accommodation as I'm based in London. Thryduulf (talk: local | en.wp | en.wikt) 11:52, 25 October 2013 (UTC)
Confirmed I am certainly still interested, and am now as certain as I can be (about 98%) that I can attend on these dates. Thryduulf (talk: local | en.wp | en.wikt) 16:39, 18 December 2013 (UTC)
  5. I'd be interested in trying this out, but I do not actually have any previous background in training anyone (although I've used wikis for a while)... Mentifisto (talk) 23:36, 21 December 2013 (UTC)
  6. Possible - thinking about it.... I live only 40 miles away, but not yet sure about availability. Fairly experienced WP editor, with experience of running workshops (but not necessarily training workshops). Ghmyrtle (talk) 11:12, 31 December 2013 (UTC)
  7. I'd like to attend. I'm based in Bath, so not too far to travel, although I'd like to stay over for informal discussion with others on the Friday night. I've been a Wikipedia user since 2004. Over the past year I've started to run Wikipedia editing events and will be running a session for University Librarians in April. That will include training them on how to train staff and students on use of Wikipedia. So I'm interested in a training session on training the trainers :-) Lisbk (talk) --86.150.103.45 13:40, 4 January 2014 (UTC)
    Confirmed Brian Kelly
  8. I'm active on both the English Wikipedia and Wicipedia Cymraeg and would like to teach others how to edit as I'm part of the Living Paths project. I have experience in preparing and teaching courses for adult learners but not of Wikipedia training, which I now hope to rectify! I'm also interested in bidding to be a Wikimedia in Residence at GLAM institutions so the ability to train other users would be especially important for that purpose. Ham (talk) 15:22, 6 January 2014 (UTC)
  9. I'm interested in attending and am available for both dates. I work for an NGO hoping to launch a learning programme in Uganda later this year using Kiwix. As I am required to train the end users this course will help me ensure Wikipedia will be used effectively in areas that otherwise have no access to this amazing resource. I am also keen to become more involved in training in the UK, both within the education sector and more broadly. I previously spent five years teaching and so am used to facilitating learning and have attended and led a significant amount of continued professional development sessions which, while focused on 'teaching' not 'training', will I imagine provide a significant amount of overlap. I will be traveling from London on Friday and would ideally stay for two nights (Fri and Sat). JoeCo85 09:45, 8 January 2014 (UCT)
  10. I'd like to have this accreditation to then go out and help more people in Wales and beyond to contribute to Wikipedia. I've recently returned to Cymru from South Korea, where I taught English (and some Welsh and British culture) at university for about ten years. While this job didn't include teaching any Wikipedia editing skills, I did actively encourage students to use the resource and guide them to do so in a proper manner. I'm a native Welsh-speaker and can put my teaching skills and experience to work in either tongue, helping trainees in their preferred language. I'm already working closely with WikiMedia's Wales Manager and the Living Paths project. The date and location suit me well. --Cymrodor 11:03, 10 January 2014 (UTC)
  11. Interested, especially as I'm fairly local. I'm not a full-time trainer, although I have been one in the past and I've trained and consulted on MediaWiki within business. Lately I've also had enquiries about training for WP, from local groups. Do we have to be "accredited" trainers though? I'm not part of WMUK (and won't be). Andy Dingley (talk) 00:00, 11 January 2014 (UTC)
  • I'm already accredited but would like to attend the Sunday as an observer and to get more experience of the assessment process. MartinPoulter (talk) 16:44, 7 January 2014 (UTC)

Interested but February 2014 date doesn't suit
