General Sir William Stirling-Hamilton of Preston, 10th Bt. was born on 17 September 1830.1 He was the son of Sir William Stirling Hamilton of Preston, 9th Bt. and Janet Marshall.2 He married Eliza Marcia Barr, daughter of Maj.-Gen. unknown Barr, on 15 October 1856.1 He died on 27 September 1913 at age 83.1
He was given the name of William Hamilton at birth.1 He was engineer with Peshawar Valley between 1855 and 1857.1 He succeeded as the 10th Baronet Hamilton, of Preston, co. Haddington [N.S., 1673] on 6 May 1856.2 He fought in the Indian Mutiny in 1857.1 He gained the rank of Captain in 1866 in the Royal Artillery.1 He gained the rank of Major in 1872 in the |Royal Horse Artillery.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1875.1 He was Commanding Officer of the Royal Artillery, Western District between 1881 and 1885.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1889.1 In 1889 his name was legally changed to William Stirling-Hamilton by Deed Poll.1 He gained the rank of General and Colonel Commandant in 1895.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.)1
