The new preferred URL format is http://vocab.getty.edu/ulan/$1, eg Vincent van Gogh (Q5582) -> http://vocab.getty.edu/page/ulan/500115588. This is in anticipation to Linked Open Data availability in Mar 2015.

I agree, there are some museums wich have a ULAN number too. Maybe one should delete the item contraint. --Pasleim (talk) 22:50, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
ULAN includes people, orgs, and undifferentiated people of various nationalities. But not works. --Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 21:16, 18 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Today I added the Getty ULAN ID to the University of Washington Department of Urban Planning and Design, and was warned that there were 5 statement restraints that weren't met, all of which are for persons, which is not appropriate for an identifier for a corporate body. This appears to have been discussed before, but nothing has been done to fix this issue. There are numerous corporate bodies (e.g., architectural firms, universities, museums, and others) in ULAN. --Adam Schiff (talk) 07:35, 2 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Emw: Could you please add this:

Duplicate records of people, as reported by ULAN identifier

to section https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Help:Merge#Where_can_I_find_items_to_merge.3F (the direct link is https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Help:Merge&action=edit&section=12)

since I don't have edit rights to that page. Thanks! --Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 21:02, 11 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Not human exceptions

[edit]

Based on this list I added exceptions for about 500 non-humans. If you want to update: Download a fresh list, do a regex replace "\r\nQ" -> "]], [[Q", fix the first and last entry and paste it here. I also imported gender so that report will drop from 3879 entries to 267. Multichill (talk) 13:31, 7 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

item requires statement constraint

[edit]

Sorry, but a lot of the requested statements are just seen throu very tight glasses. Date of birth, Place of birth, Given name, this all did not work for a lot of Items. For ever item with a notname/provisional name, for all thore, who are artists that have lived before the 15th century. There are some thousands of artists just form ancient Greece and Rome for whom we can't provide this informations. For some, because we did not know names, for others, because the name system in Greece as in Rome were different to today. But I get this now every time as a mistake. This is frustrating. Please remember, that there are more than "Summ of all paintings". -- Marcus Cyron (talk) 21:28, 13 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Agree. This is a widespread problem with constraints IMHO. Is there any central place to discuss it? --Marsupium (talk) 10:24, 28 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion constraints

[edit]

@Marsupium, Robert.Allen: can you please stop removing the suggestion constraints (suggestion constraint (Q62026391))? According to the report this property is used 78,900 times of which 77,296 are human. That's 98% so having human related suggestions makes sense. Suggestion constraints are not extremely well documented at the moment so you might have missed this new concept. Also the wording is in need of improvement for which I filed phab:T227383. Multichill (talk) 11:20, 14 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

These "Suggestion constraints" are pure nonsense. -- Marcus Cyron (talk) 18:58, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Marcus Cyron, it is clearly not helpful to raise such warnings either in cases in which you could not state assert about birth/death place/date. --Horcrux (talk) 14:45, 10 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The way around the suggestion constraints it to stick these names and organizations in the exception to constraint list under each suggestion constraint. If we were to do this with everything that doesn't fit these suggestion constraints, the exception to constraint list would become burdensome (i.e. nonsensical). It would make more sense to remove the suggestion constraints. This is the only external ID property that I'm aware of that has this many suggestion constraints for a mixed data set. One can argue percentages, it's still a mixed data set that has people that don't have adequate data to meet the constraints and organizations that will never meet the constraints. First name constraint

[edit]

@Multichill: It is false that all items having this identifier should have given name (P735): all items having Roman praenomen (P2358) (e.g Diocletian (Q43107)) should never have given name (P735). Objections to the removal of the constraint, or maybe is it possible to say that each item should have either given name (P735) or Roman praenomen (P2358)? Thanks, --Epìdosis 20:33, 26 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

That's why it's a suggestion constraint (Q62026391). This property is used on more than 82.000 humans of which 58 have Roman praenomen (P2358), that's about 0.07% of them. Multichill (talk) 20:42, 26 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
But a lot have not even one. There are thousands of ancient names who are not fitting the modern Names system. And thousands of artists withaut any name, only with a notname. The ame with date and place of birth and death. This did not work for thousands of them. This all is so frustrating. -- Marcus Cyron (talk) 18:57, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
