[edit]

This property makes very little sense as currently scoped. "subject" is an uncontrolled, non-unique field in the DPLA data model. The URL formatter just links to a search query. There is no guarantee that all of the items in the linked query are actually related to the Wikidata item, and some of the ones currently in use surely have false positives ("Baltimore," "Maine," etc.). In fact, this is not really an ID at all, just a field in the data, and DPLA has never referred to it as such. And the link is not a URI where the term is defined, just an advanced search URL. What makes more sense is for this property not to be applied to Wikidata items about terms, as it currently is, but applied to items about DPLA works, to mark those works' subjects, as described by cataloging institution. For example, it makes more sense to apply DPLA subject term (P4272)Urban parks at M9737159, as per that specific catalog record, than at urban park (Q22746).
