Motivation

Encyclopedia of China (Q197836) is China's first comprehensive modern encyclopedia. Unfortunately, the contents on its website are behind a paywall (though they give you a 7-day free access after signing up). But nonetheless, it's still an important and useful source, and we already have several other properties for paywalled resources (e.g. WBIS ID (P8081)). For those who are not able to access the contents, I already created a mix'n'match catalog at Mix'n'match #4395 for articles of the second edition. I think the concern was about if the tables of contents of the encyclopedia can be viewed as compiled work and therefore are subject to copyright. However, here in Wikidata we will only provide IDs and links to its website, not the tables of contents, so I think it's not the same issue. Actually, according to zh:WikiProject:传统百科全书条目, there was also a similar concern about Encyclopædia Britannica (Q455), but we do have Encyclopædia Britannica Online ID (P1417) here. If external IDs are subject to copyright, I think most properties of external identifiers here would be deleted. But since I don't have sufficient expertise in copyright law, other inputs are welcome. --Stevenliuyi (talk) 05:17, 29 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
