applies to work
[edit]Originally proposed at Wikidata:Property proposal/Creative work
Description | work or narration for or in which this statement is true |
---|---|
Data type | Item |
Domain | I'm thinking mostly of fictional/mythical/etc. entities, for now, but this could be broadened |
Allowed values | creative work (and similar entities like |
Example 1 | Gawain (Q831685) child (P40) Wigalois (Q43376180); <applies to work> Wigalois (Q2569730) |
Example 2 | The Little Man (Q5787753) narrative role (P5800) foil (Q5563727); relative to (P2210) Pink Panther (Q15012089)}; <applies to work> The Pink Panther Show (Q140680) |
Example 3 | Mickey Mouse (Q11934) contributor to the creative work or subject (P767) Les Clark (Q1368756); object of statement has role (P3831) character animator (Q28122926); <applies to work> The Sorcerer's Apprentice (Q3202209) |
Example 4 | Mahogany Town (Q15133086) population (P1082) 14; <applies to work> Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver (Q611189) |
Planned use | moving uses of of (P642) and present in work (P1441) to the new qualifier |
Motivation
[edit]Currently we use both of (P642) and present in work (P1441) to restrict a certain statement about a (fictional) entity to a certain work. present in work (P1441) should be used to restrict statements to the works in which they are true (e.g. Gawain (Q831685)child (P40)Wigalois (Q43376180)
I noticed that the use of of (P642) is deprecated and we should try to find new, more specific properties to replace it. So first this proposed property should replace the uses of of (P642) to restrict statements to works. Moreover I think that this new property can also be used to replace the uses of present in work (P1441) as a qualifier. As written above the distinction is not made consistently and I also don't see a loss of information when using the new property for both use cases. - of (P642) is the worst property ever and present in work (P1441) just doesn't sound right. I Support --Shisma (talk) 10:15, 20 March 2022 (UTC)
- Question Is not applies to part, aspect, or form (P518) what you are looking for? --Tinker Bell ★ ♥ 08:42, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
- No, if you have a look at the examples: Wigalois (Q2569730) (a literary work) is not a part of Gawain (Q831685) (a legendary character), The Sorcerer's Apprentice (Q3202209) not a part of Mickey Mouse (Q11934), Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver (Q611189) not a part of Mahogany Town (Q15133086) and Pink Panther (Q15012089) not a part of The Little Man (Q5787753). - Valentina.Anitnelav (talk) 12:26, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
- Support Sounds like a plan! I agree with the need identified by the proposer, and I agree that there is no good solution at the moment (valid in place (P3005) (or valid in period (P1264) or applies to jurisdiction (P1001)) came to mind, but won’t fit either). - Comment I am not super-convinced by Example 3 − it feels to me we are trying to shoehorn into Mickey Mouse (Q11934) data that really belongs into The Sorcerer's Apprentice (Q3202209)? Jean-Fred (talk) 16:37, 1 April 2022 (UTC)
