Motivation
[edit]There are special registration number properties (e. g. provisional house number (P6529), aircraft registration (P426) or bridge number (P9759)), however a general registration number property is missing. Specifically, I need such item for desription of evidence item (Q108809965) (archival cartons, books etc.). I have created a provisional modelling Q108810217#P1545 using series ordinal (P1545), which creates constraint violation. To avoid this, I propose the new property. I could propose "archival registration number", however it seems to me better to propose a general property, which could be used not only for archival items but for any registered object/item, which doesn't have special registration number property. --Daniel Baránek (talk) 09:06, 6 October 2021 (UTC)
Discussion
[edit]- @Daniel Baránek: Are you aware of catalog code (P528)? It has "register" as an alias; I think "registration number" would also be suitable, it seems to be the same meaning as you are suggesting here, no? ArthurPSmith (talk) 16:53, 6 October 2021 (UTC)
- @ArthurPSmith: I know about it. However, the description of catalog code (P528) says: "use with qualifier catalog (P972)". So, catalog code (P528) is not intended to be general "registration number" but only for museum/musical catalogues. However, what to do, when there is no catalogue? --Daniel Baránek (talk) 17:29, 6 October 2021 (UTC)
- For examle, the new property could be used for "registration code" of the Czechoslovak secret police (e. g. Pavel Kohout (Q163557)). catalog code (P528) would be really inappropriate. --Daniel Baránek (talk) 08:52, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
- Comment it's not really clear from the three samples above how this should be used and why this isn't included in the inventory number. There is section, verse, paragraph, or clause (P958) as a generic property. In general, I agree that catalog code (P528) should be used. On a side note: don't added Social Security numbers to Wikidata. --- Jura 11:13, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Daniel Baránek: I just noticed an older proposal (which was recently marked as "ready") - Wikidata:Property proposal/record number - could this proposal merge with that one? ArthurPSmith (talk) 17:22, 14 October 2021 (UTC)
- Well, it could be merged. The older proposal seems to be almost the same as mine. --Daniel Baránek (talk) 17:33, 14 October 2021 (UTC)
- Not done directly, no consensus to create, but please note that Wikidata:Property proposal/record number was closed and record number (P9994) has been created for that --DannyS712 (talk) 01:03, 2 January 2022 (UTC)
