term in higher taxon
[edit]Originally proposed at Wikidata:Property proposal/Natural science
Description | A superclass term used for species-neutral or higher order taxons. Subproperty of "subclass of" (P279). |
---|---|
Data type | Item |
Domain | item |
Example 1 | human musculus biceps brachii (Q25950351) → biceps brachii (Q201363) |
Example 2 | human lung (Q2640512) → lung (Q7886) |
Example 3 | mouse brain (Q65119893) → brain (Q1073) |
Example 4 | human cholinergic neuron (Q101405051) → cholinergic neuron (Q12167532) |
Example 5 | human eye (Q430024) → mammalian eye (Q6745755) |
Planned use | Map manually different cell types and anatomy terms to their species neutral counterparts. Provide the means for others to do so. |

Motivation
[edit]Wikidata is growing as a life sciences resource. It has terms for biological concepts at the species level and more general terms (see examples above). Using subclass of (P279) works, but it is a generic property. A more specific subproperty would make Wikidata cleaner and allow targeted queries.
As an example, parent taxon (P171) is a subproperty of subclass of (P279) that fills a similar gap. TiagoLubiana (talk) 18:42, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

- Comment Hmm, I see from the examples many cases where different types of subclass relations are used, and isolating the one for more general organisms would be useful. We do have the issue that "subproperty" relations are not well supported in Wikidata, but I suppose that's something that could eventually be addressed. So I guess I see the need for this...
