NGC 55也称为珍珠串星系（英语：String of Pearls Galaxy）^[7]，是位于星座玉夫座的一个麦哲伦型棒旋星系，距离我们约650万光年。天文学家詹姆士·敦洛普于1826年7月7日发现了它^[8]。它和它的邻居NGC 300一样，是离本星系群最近的星系之一，可能位于银河系和玉夫座星系群之间^[8]，估计其质量为（2.0 ± 0.4）× 10¹⁰M_☉^[9]。

附近星系和星系群资讯

NGC 55和螺旋星系 NGC 300传统上被认定为玉夫座星系群的成员，这是同名星座中附近的星系群。然而，最近的距离量测表明，这两个星系实际上只是前景星系^[10]。

NGC 55和NGC 300很可能形成一对引力束缚对^[4]。

视觉外观

《韦伯学会深空观察者手册（英语：Webb Society Deep-Sky Observer's Handbook）》^[11]对NGC 55写了如下的描述：“近边缘，不对称，凸起附近有一些尘埃的迹象，凸起呈弥漫状，宽阔，有些细长，南缘锋利；在凸起的东南部，它强烈弯曲，并排列著4或5个微弱的节；曲线的北缘很陡。”伯纳姆称其为“南方天空中杰出的星系之一”，有点像大麦哲伦星云的缩小版^[12]。
