Dawn (Japanese: ヒカリ Hikari) is the female player character of Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum and their Generation VIII remakes Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. As an NPC, Dawn serves as the assisant to Professor Rowan. Her male counterpart is Lucas.
Terminology
Dawn (Japanese: ヒカリ Hikari) is her name when she appears as a non-player character in the core series games, and is also the name of her counterpart in Pokémon Masters EX.
Some screenshots of Pokémon Platinum on the Japanese Nintendo website refer to Dawn as ティナ (Tina).[4] A trailer for Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl refers to Dawn in English as "Hikari", her Japanese official name.
Appearance
Dawn is a young girl with fair skin, vivid blue eyes, navy blue hair, and a slightly thin build.
In Pokémon Diamond & Pearl, Dawn's default attire consists of a black V-neck tank top with a white undershirt and a pink skirt as if both parts were acting like a dress. Her head mans a white beanie hat with a partial Poké Ball marking in pink engraved on it. She wears gold hair clips that hold up her hair in the front. A red scarf surrounds her neck, and her footwear features pink tall boots with satin black knee-high socks. In Pokémon Masters EX an alternate palette of Dawn's default appearance shows her wearing a green V-neck tank top with a chartreuse undershirt and a yellow skirt as if both parts were acting like a dress. The hat on her head is chartreuse with a partial Poké Ball marking colored yellow. The hair clips are red, and the boots are yellow with forest green knee-high socks.
In Pokémon Platinum, Dawn wears a different outfit to combat colder climates. Her platinum form features a salmon pink trenchcoat with a white scarf surrounding her neck. She retains the same white beanie hat and yellow hair clips. The boots are slightly different than what she wore for her default attire, and the socks are white, extending a little past the knees.
In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, Dawn has many variations through trainer customization. Her summer style shows her wearing a white blouse with blue denim shorts. The shoes feature black and white high tops with black socks partially concealed within. The Pikachu hoodie style shows her wearing a satin black hoodie with yellow spark markings, which also include navy blue leggings and red and white high tops. The overalls style show Dawn wearing a white t-shirt with bright blue overalls and brown formal shoes. The Eevee jacket style shows her wearing a steel gray baseball cap, a black and white jacket with yellow stars, a blue tank top, a mint turquoise skirt, and deep space purple sneakers with black socks. The Gengar jacket style features almost the same color scheme as the Eevee jacket, although the jacket is magenta, and the tank top is black, while everything else in the build remains the same. The cyber style shows Dawn wearing a brown short dress with scarlet and red lines. The boots are the same color with white socks. The winter style shows Dawn wearing a red beanie hat, an orange fleece coat with faded cream white sleeves, a mustard yellow maxi skirt, and polished orange dress shoes. The spring style shows her wearing a turquoise beret hat, a pink sweater with a white blouse under it, a gray plaid skirt, and copper many jane shoes with gray socks. The casual style shows Dawn wearing an onyx black baseball cap with a red stripe, a yellow punk jacket with a white denim dress under it, and black combat boots. The leather jacket style shows Dawn wearing a black leather jacket with a white t-shirt under it, leggings with multiple purple color codes, and black high tops. Her contest dress, which is otherwise unplayable in the outside world and only shown in contests, features a white dress with red ribbons decorating it, the footwear features white mary janes.
In the core series games
As the protagonist
Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl
Dawn lives in Twinleaf Town with her mother. Dawn and Barry both see a television program about a red Gyarados, so the two head to the nearby Lake Verity in search of a similar Pokémon. As the enter the lake area, Professor Rowan and his assistant Lucas are leaving, but have inadvertently left a briefcase behind. Dawn and Barry wander into the tall grass, but are suddenly attacked by wild Starly; as a last resort, they each use one of the Pokémon in the briefcase the Professor has forgotten. The two take their Pokémon to Sandgem Town to return them to Professor Rowan, but Rowan decides to let the two keep their Pokémon, and also gives them each a Pokédex.
Dawn goes on to gather the eight Gym Badges of Sinnoh, defeat Team Galactic, and conquer the Pokémon League. She has to stop Team Galactic from trying to use either DialgaDBD or PalkiaPSP to destroy the entire universe in order to create a new one.
Pokémon Platinum
Dawn lives in Twinleaf Town with her mother. Dawn and Barry both see a television program about Professor Rowan, so the two head to Sandgem Town to visit Professor Rowan at his lab to get some Pokémon of their own. They receive their Pokémon on Route 201 when Professor Rowan realizes that they are so dedicated to Pokémon that they would attempt to travel from Twinleaf Town to Sandgem Town through the tall grass without any Pokémon of their own.
Dawn goes on to gather the eight Gym Badges of Sinnoh, defeat Team Galactic, and conquer the Pokémon League. She has to go to the Distortion World and face Giratina, in order to stop both worlds from destroying each other.
Pokémon Black, White, Black 2, and White 2
In Pokémon Black, White, Black 2, and White 2, the player character from Diamond, Pearl and Platinum and their exploits are referenced by Cynthia, who remembers a young Trainer who had defeated her.
As a non-playable character
If the player chooses Lucas, Dawn appears in the game as an NPC. She serves as Professor Rowan's assistant. She lives in Sandgem Town with her little sister, grandfather, and father—who also works as an assistant of Professor Rowan. She received her first partner Pokémon before the player, having either a Turtwig, Chimchar or Piplup—the Pokémon she has is always the one that has a type disadvantage against the player's first partner Pokémon.
She demonstrates how to catch Pokémon to the player by catching a wild Bidoof.

Trivia
- In the early development of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, Dawn was originally going to have a father, which is further evidenced by script files leftover in their remakes, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.[6]
- In both English and Japanese, Dawn shares her name with an Evolution stone. However, it is not the same stone: her Japanese name is the same as the name of the Shiny Stone, not the Dawn Stone.
- Dawn weighs 75 lbs (34 kg). This was confirmed by checking the heights and weights of certain Pokémon in the Pokédex. She is the same weight as Weavile and Porygon-Z.
- The majority of her Japanese default names are shared with Leaf and Lyra. She also shares all of Kris's alternate Japanese names.
- She shared her Chinese name with Wally before his name was changed in Sun and Moon.
- In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, if the player's first partner Pokémon choice was Turtwig, Dawn's team after the player has entered the Hall of Fame ten times consists of fully evolved versions of her animated series counterpart's team members, only replacing Pachirisu with Bellossom.
- Similarly if the player’s first partner Pokémon choice was Piplup and entered the Hall of Fame ten times, Dawn’s team consists of Pokémon Ash and Paul used throughout the Diamond and Pearl anime except for her Gorebyss. Specifically, Paul also owns a Honchkrow and Froslass while Ash owns a Sceptile, Infernape (which was originally Paul’s as a Chimchar) and owned Dawn's Ambipom when it was an Aipom.
- If the player enters the Hall of Fame 10 times with Chimchar as their first partner Pokémon, Dawn's entire team will consist of Pokémon used by a major trainer in the anime. Namely, Torterra is owned by both Ash and Paul, with Ash also owning a Mr. Mime, Brock has a Crobat, Blastoise and Arcanine are both owned by Gary Oak, and Conway has a Lickilicky.
