Underground Path (Routes 5-6) in Gen IV
The Underground Path (Japanese: 地下通路 Underground Path) between Routes 5 and 6 is located directly underneath Saffron City and terminates just to the north and to the south of Saffron City.
In Generations I, III, and VII, the path is the only way to travel between Cerulean City and Vermilion City until the gates surrounding Saffron City are opened, which does not occur until their guards receive a drinkRBY or the Key Item TeaFRLGPE from Celadon City. In Generations II and IV, both entrances to the path are blocked until the problem at the Power Plant is solved.
Route description
The path is a long, dark hallway that travels under Saffron City. Despite the cave-like lighting of the path, there is no threat to be attacked by wild Pokémon. Occasionally, by using an Itemfinder,RBYFRLG a Dowsing MCHN,HGSS or the player's Partner Pokémon's tail,PE items that Trainers have dropped along the path can be found and retrieved.
In Generations I and III, a girl in the Route 5 gate is willing to trade Pokémon with the player. In Pokémon Red, Blue, and FireRed, she asks for a Nidoran♂ in exchange for a Nidoran♀; in Pokémon Red, Green, and LeafGreen, she requests a Nidoran♀ in exchange for a Nidoran♂; in Pokémon Yellow, she offers a Machoke (which will immediately evolve into Machamp after being traded) in exchange for a Cubone; and in Japanese Pokémon Blue, she wants to trade her Poliwag for a Rattata.

Differences between generations
Across all generations, the design is virtually the same, only with updated graphics, although it is much shorter in Generations II and IV. In Generation IV, a man is in the Underground Path who will trade TM64 (Explosion) for the RageCandyBar that can be bought in Mahogany Town.
In Generations I and II, the Underground Path is a map location. In Generation III, the player is shown to be in Route 6 if they use the map while in the Underground Path (except in the Route 5 gatehouse, which shows as Route 5). In Generation IV, the player is shown to be in Route 5 (except in the Route 6 gatehouse, which shows as Route 6).
In the manga
Pokémon Adventures
Although the Underground Path doesn't make an actual appearance in Pokémon Adventures, the map of Red's journey in volume 1 shows that he used it as a shortcut to Vermilion City between ...But Fearow Itself! and Danger: High Voltorb.
